“I am incredibly grateful for the experience. The Film Connection is so unique and a terrific find especially for me and my younger brother who have spent so much of our schooling career in a less than conventional setting. Continuing to pursue our education in such a ‘hands-on’ manner has been excellent.”
“From a practical point of view I have most definitely left the program with a broader understanding of the industry. This has been learned through time spent in the studio, time spent on various shoots, and also through the reading and video materials that the Film Connection has provided. “
Chloe Baker
“The crews from L.A. were really great to work with, and it was a great experience to see how different their productions go compared to the work that we do at AD-Venture Videos. With getting to know them and see what they do, I could not be more certain that THIS, being a part of the entertainment industry and being the crew behind the scenes for the shoots, is most definitely what I want to continue doing and learning about. There are a lot of different jobs to learn about and I want to be able to do at least a little bit of everything. I will find one job I would want to specialize in, but for now, I want to learn basically everything.”

“My mentor gave me his studio and equipment to shoot whatever I want while he’s out of town. I’m planning on shooting a couple of friends playing acoustic guitar and singing. It should be fun. Life tends to be more fun when fear is cut out of the picture. It’s an exciting adventure!”
William Kyle
“My first week in the program and I’m already working on a big short-film/film video for one of the biggest hip-hop artists around. Thankfully everyone especially my mentor has been very helpful and answering any questions I have. It’s a lot of work and long hours but so far I haven’t minded it. The one downside I have to say about my first week is getting back in the routine of waking up early and sitting in traffic but other than those factors I’ve really been enjoying myself.”
Jack Isabella
“Jay, from Student Services, called me Friday night about a job. It’s a documentary about a Jazz player. Very interested, so I called the man who wants to make it and seems like a nice man and I’m very much going to do it. First job, yay!”
Hunter Tammy
“Still coming down from last Thursday’s video shoot! It was amazing to finally get my hands dirty and actually be in a production. It was scary and exciting and all kinds of feelings. Got to help set up with my mentor and scope out where I wouldn’t get in the way of the other cameras and the band. And when the time came to record… WOW! I was in the moment and loving every minute of it. I’m looking forward to doing more of that for the rest of forever and a day, if I’m so lucky”
Brandon Hanson
“I’m booked for a feature my mentor’s producing and will be working as a production PA! Even though I’m a student, this opportunity will be a paid job, so I’m real happy to hear that!”
John Blake
“These past few weeks I have had the opportunity to work on a film set. It has been a very interesting experience. I have found it fascinating to see how each department has their own niche on set. And how the different departments coordinate through the AD and others to make the best possible picture arrive on screen. The other thing that I find really interesting is to see how an idea will start from the script, be molded by the director, and then used by the director of photography. The director of photography will use the idea to get an idea of the atmosphere he needs to build for the scene at hand. He will then give the idea to the gaffer, who then gives it to the electricians and grips. They then build the atmosphere with lights and other equipment. While they are doing that hair and makeup are getting the actors ready for the light and the art department makes sure that everything is ready for the set. There are all of these moving parts coordinating to make a set work. I think that it is awesome and it has been a lot of fun.”
Tyler Sharon
“My mentor told me I will get to be on set for the shooting of an independent horror movie this coming Wednesday! This is great news. I am appreciative that he is giving me this opportunity right out of the gate.”
Hiram Smith
“I learned to anticipate what the director needed before they asked.”
Sasha M.
“I finally understood set protocol by doing — not just watching.”
Thomas D.
“This week my mentor showed me the studio in a very in-depth way, and I also got introduced to many more employees in the studio. I spent the day getting to know what tools we have in the studio and where certain equipment lives. Basically being informed as to the culture of the office and what types of services my mentors company provides. I got to help and PA, as well as Grip on a weekly shoot that was going on that day. During shoot I assisted the Director with gaffing and provided general help to the talent and crew. I continued on to learn more about KINOs and how their ballasts work. Afterwards, I wrapped and broke down equipment like a pro thanks to my PA experience my mentor had just given me. Along with their in house Gaffer/DP, my mentor taught me some very useful production tips. We spent the day learning tricks on building c-stands, moves every dolly grip should know, and swapping production stories. I also learned to mount a camera and tripod that I had never set up before. We set up their green screen and lit it for different purposes. I also learned more about the whys and how’s of those lighting techniques. I was able to see how the lit set looked through the camera, and how to adjust it for a better picture. The DP taught me the different names of their lights, uses, and their pros and cons. I’ve been really enjoying the company and its employees. Everyone has been very welcoming and willing to show me new things! The reading is more interesting than I first thought and I find it equally helpful to the hands-on training.”
Jeremy Perez
“I went every single day this week. Monday I worked with my mentor on more commercials fixed numbers and words in it. The following two days were my externship days where I got to work on going through multiple commercials in order to make sure all the appropriate contact data was correct, as well as the Add Id’s and such, making sure they matched up with the correct ones on all documents. On Thursday I went to a film shoot with the other extern I work with every so often in the studio, as well as an actual employee from my mentors’ studio, who I worked with before early in the studio. I was introduced to a guy who taught me about lights, as well as the different lighting he was going to be using for the shoot. I got to time the lady who was being filmed and read along with what she was reading to make sure she didn’t miss any words and to ensure she said them correctly. Everything with my mentor is great. I love the way he teaches me things, making it easy for me to understand. To top it off, he is really good with working with me on different projects and such. I’m really enjoying it here and like that I get to learn new things each day every since I made the choice to enroll in the Film Connection.”
Wyoming Kaut
“I’m starting to pick up jobs outside of the program already and looking for other productions companies in the Dallas area for a paid internship once I get out of the program. To say the least I have jumped light-years ahead in my production game due to my connections I have made in this program.”
Hanna Marin
“Through this program I have been introduced to many aspects of film production unknown by me before the beginning of my study. The incoming flow of information has been consistent leading me to learn at a fast pace. The experience only gets better as time goes on. There is always something new and interesting. I know Jack really wants to see me as well as his other students succeed. All we have to do is show up and put in the work, at his studio and at home. I am able to ask questions and am given any help that I could possibly need. I’m far from being a professional but this path that I am taking will certainly help to get me there.
The work is hard but exciting and rewarding. As my experience grows and my skills improve I am looking forward to the remainder of the program. The weeks we are approaching are filled with big assignments, allowing me to do more. This program is allowing me to learn my craft, meet quality people and do amazing work. After only eight weeks I know attending The Film Connection is one of the best decisions that I have made.”
Debra Whitman
“Fresh week and I had a very busy weekend. Working with my mentors last Friday we were on set filming the Flo-Rida Seagrams Gin Concert as well as interviewed some of the Seagrams Gin calendar girls. Was a great experience and I had a great time working. That brought me home around 2a.m then we were back on the road by 7:30a.m on the next day to film a few interviews for Inside Edition. Can’t wait to see where this will take me next!”
Cindy Moon
“One day this week, I set up a shoot in the stage, set lights worked with Art department, also working as a dolly Griped for the DP. A few days later I had my one-on-one Lesson time with my mentor, then started editing a reel for the Director himself! The next day I went over the next assignment my mentor, then worked some more hands-on, editing the reel for another director in the Company. The remainder of this day I helped with Pre Pro for shoot that is fast approaching in the near future. Then the next day I went on location for a shoot, call time 12 noon, helped set lights and ran smoke machines, struck lights and rapped shoot with crew, long day. We got done at 4 am, returned smoke machines and 4k ballast back to rental house! I love the production company and my mentor. I had no clue about FCP before I started this course and the team I’m working with is amazing and so helpful. They always critique in a way that is helpful and kind. The course lays out the ground work in a simple and concise way that I feel anyone could understand.”
Gerald Vogt
“I learned to anticipate needs, not just follow orders.”
Celine B.
“I arrived at the studio in the morning to everyone scrambling around the studio due to a shoot happening that very morning. The shoot was for a woman who was explaining the most efficient ways to shop and save money at different grocery stores around the country. I got to run the tele-prompter until we were done, which was roughly around noon. At that point, my mentors had to go to a business lunch at the Chamber of Commerce, so I spent that time reading and familiarizing myself more with the studio. When my mentors returned, we I discussed my homework assigned to me prior to the lesson plan that day, as well as our upcoming plans for the following day of training. I showed up at the office the next day at 6:45 am and quickly departed for Newberry, South Carolina. We had an all-day film shoot up there for a local hospital that has the best joint replacement program in the midlands. I was placed into the role of Assistant Gaffer under the supervision of a professional working for the shoot. He was a fascinating older man who had been running lights in the industry for decades. I learned a great deal from him, including some terminology that would otherwise have gone right over my head. We had multiple locations for the shoot, so by the end of the day I had become fairly efficient in the tear-down and set-up of the lighting equipment, as well as the terminology. Once the lighting was set-up at each location, I listened and watched as intently as I could to what my mentor, as well as the rest of the crew, including our cinematographer, were doing, while trying to stay out of their way. This day was an excellent first day crash course on what I will be doing over the next few months while enrolled in the Film Connection. I had a blast, learned a lot and, despite being exhausted by the end, cannot wait for more.”
John Hamilton
“We are still wrapping up a movie. I am in the office from nine to five, helping the production coordinator with paperwork. I do it all here, from deal memos to checks and errands. We are all pretty much “buddies” in the office right now. So far I’m loving the studio! From the recent movie I have learned so much on set. I was pretty much a PA on set, met so many great people. The wrap party was just great! I got a chance to meet the actors and the crew, so that was cool.”
Huan Tran
“I participated in my first shoot this past Friday night! It was a concert in Rome, GA and the crew was filming one band in particular to make a film video for one of their songs. It was an outdoor shoot with the temperatures dropping to 30 degrees so it was rather cold, but aside from that, it was really fun. I got to observe everything and felt like I learned a good bit.
Then a couple days ago I was able to participate in my second shoot! The production manager from my first shoot called me and asked if I would like to assist them in making a sizzle reel for a TV show, so I was happy that they were willing to invite me back. The shoot was officially titled Master of Mix Post-Show Digital Sizzle and they even included me on the call sheet, which made me feel like a legitimate team member.”
Seth Adam
“In going over Lesson 3 with my mentor I was surprised to learn that it is not actually the producer’s job to raise the money that is needed for production, but rather, the role is designated to the executive. Needless to say, the producer will be expected to hire on the best person for this job. My mentor and I agreed that trying to be a hero requires common sense and treading carefully. He explained an anecdote of his experience in being hero on the set of his first produced horror feature, the Attic. Just as the camera was about to roll for a heavily prepared shot, my mentor noticed that there was no entry wound, and that the camera would pick up on it. My mentor followed his gut and shouted his concern just as the director was prepared to roll the camera. It turns out that my mentor was in fact correct, and this risk was certainly appreciated. During this session, my mentor was also able to review a short film script that I had written, in the hopes of ultimately producing it under his guidance. My mentor had excellent, constructive criticism and suggestions about how to improve the story. He questioned some of the back-story, which helped me better understand the importance of logic and story-flow from another pair of eyes. I was very appreciative of his commentary, as I knew my story was missing some important elements. Tom also referred me to a 2-day, short film shoot. I gladly seized the opportunity to volunteer as a production assistant for both days. The objective of the short film is based on a 168-hour challenge, in which religious filmmakers are expected to produce a final-edited film in one week. The challenge begins when the filmmakers receive the theme of their stories; this year, the theme is “keeping promises.” The producers of the film were connected to my mentor through his last feature film, Sprawl. The whole production takes place at the producer’s house in Altadena, California. So day 1 of the film I arrived at the set at 9:30 AM and was greeted by the primary producer of the film. I met the DP and the 1st assistant director (AD), both of whom who turned out to be my direct bosses. In preparing for the first scene of the shoot, the 1st AD gave me an opportunity to be the clapper throughout the production of the film, therefore, making my title the 2nd AC for the production. Something which had amazed most people on the set, I was able to use an IPAD application for movie slates. My role required saying “Scene #, Take #” prior to each take. I was surprised to learn as much as I did just being designated as the clapper. This required coordination with the DP and the sound technician.”
Jeremy Mosst
“Film Connection put me in a great position to work at a great studio that allowed me to network and learn the tools necessary to succeed in this business. Through my mentor I was able to work in many different departments (pre-production, casting, production, hair & make-up, post-production, and research) on many different shoots. Because of the work I did with my mentor I acquired the skills that enabled me to land jobs on shows such as The Voice (which I’ve been working with the last two years), The Newsroom, Suits, and 30 Rock. The latter of which I worked on its last two seasons as a casting assistant. I’ve also worked on several reality shows and most recently a film featuring Ben Stiller and Amanda Seyfried. I’ve maintained a relationship with my mentor and continue to work with him when able.”
Daniel Parker
“I like working with my mentor a lot, and I don’t want to misrepresent him by sounding like a bootlicker, however I will say that I have learned more things I actually want to know from him than from the accumulated sources of knowledge that I have collected in my entire life. Math? Nah, I don’t need that trash. Lighting? Absolutely fascinating!”
Joshua Jones
“The walkthroughs of safety protocol made me someone people trust.”
Riley M.
“Crew etiquette clicked when I saw how smoothly a set can run with it.”
Peyton A.
“After we finished reading over the quizzes, my mentors showed me what I had missed the day before. They were working on an eye glasses ad using a green screen! Jim started explaining to me what was being done that day, and turns to the lights. He stands in front of the 2k with a large diffuser in front of it, and then removes the diffuser to show me the difference between hard light and soft light. After the door rings he asks Tony, the DP, to explain to me even further. Tony begins to introduce me to the setup of the lights, and then takes a tennis ball and places it in front of the camera. He points a light to it and talks about dimension. When the light was placed behind it, the shadows made it look a lot more three dimensional. Then he placed the light on the right side, casting a shadow on the left of the ball. He continued to tell me some basics on lighting using some terms that I couldn’t wrap my head around. The whole time I was thinking, “I really have a lot to learn.” It made me extremely glad though, because that was why I came here.”
Dylan Cameron
“This week I participated in a 48 hour film festival based in Richmond, VA. For this assignment I had the role of production assistant. All total we had a cast and crew of about twenty members for a short film to be shot within one day with post on the next day. We as a cast and crew were able to complete our task for the production and as I write this blog post the film is now in post production. This experience for me is unbeatable. I was able to be on a set for a full day surrounded by artists who are all dedicated to their craft and love to work hard. I learned a lot about the realities of filmmaking and what it takes to complete a film. As I continue to learn, my roles on a set will increase and soon I know I’ll be a major factor on a set. I was happy and grateful for the opportunity to even be a part of the festival. I know the short we created will do well in the judging next week and I hope the audience at the premiere enjoys what we put together.”
Robert Kimberly
“My first call sheet was a disaster — but I learned what goes into good prep.”
Skyler E.
“Nothing replaces setting up a C-stand with your own hands.”
Quinn Z.
“This past week at the studio has been busy. Saturday we filmed a 5K run to raise awareness for autism. Then Sunday we began shooting a film video. My first day on a film video set was amazing! We shot three separate locations including a sound stage/bar/ and park. I learned about lighting and set etiquette, along with terminology. I helped put together the dolly and crane and during the actual shooting it was my job to handle playback of the track. We began at 9 A.M. and wrapped around 8:30. Was a long day but sooo worth it. I followed my mentor around on set and watched exactly what a producer has to handle when there is twenty people working under you. The most challenging part had to be remembering terminology. There was so much to observe I just sat back and soaked it all in.”
Ryan Owen
“I learned a lot about equipment and how to set it up safely (C-Stands, Stingers, Fabric and screens used to carve or “paint with light,” how to operate a fog machine, how to figure out how many volts can go into a generator, etc). I can now confidently set-up a 12×12 frame with little help! Being able to observe the different departments and all the considerations that they have to make was great, especially as everyone was helpful and good at communicating. I think one of my favorite parts of the first shoot were operating a fog machine and seeing how people come together during a low budget film when obstacles arise.”
Samuel Owen
“The shoot ended and Zac made sure all the forms were signed as needed. Mike and I took the equipment down and packed up, he showed me how to fold the sound cords so as not crinkle them up, and we loaded everything up and drove back to Nashville. We had stopped for Lunch on the way up and stopped for Dinner on the way back, Zac paid for our meals as we were helping his shoot so that was cool. All in all we spent about 5 1/2 to 6 hours driving for a two hour shoot. I asked Zac how much of that would be in the film and he stated it was maybe Five minutes all told, we would see during the editing process. Two hours for only a few minutes’ worth of film time. This is how things go in the world of film shoots I suppose. Not terribly stressful and I learned a bit about how Zac works and what is expected on-set.”
Jennifer Kathleen
“One day, while at my day job, I received an email from Christine asking if I would be interested in going with her and one of her staff members to shoot a commercial in Galveston, TX. It’s on a Monday so she knew I would probably have work, but I’m glad she asked, because I was able to get the day off. Since I wasn’t able to make the film video filming, I DEFINITELY don’t want to miss another opportunity to be on a set!”
Austin Robert
“Hands-on training made me comfortable working with lighting, grip, and audio.”
Taylor R.
“I never thought I’d enjoy scheduling — but now I can’t imagine a set without it.”
Morgan X.
“I am a man of many questions and stories, as is my mentor, so we spend quite a while – I’d say at least 4 rounds of coffee – talking. Though like I said it is a high point of my week being able to talk to someone who not only has the same love and values for the industry, but can also extend advice about it. To me, that is the best way to spend my afternoon!”
Joseph Tylor
“My lessons were strictly hands on. Textbook work was kept to a minimum and I was put in positions to learn on my own with my mentor there in case I needed assistance. My mentor did not hover over me correcting everything that I did wrong, instead he allowed me to realize my faults and correct them myself. The one on one approach to learning helped the most. This approach as an extern far outweighs learning with other students around.”
Luke Ashley
“This past week I was able to be on location during a production. We had a pretty small crew but it was very interesting nonetheless. I got to see how a guerrilla crew goes about getting everything done that a production needs to get done. And how on a film set there needs to be little ego because things have to get done. It was refreshing to see everyone pitching in to try and get the shots that we needed to get for the production.”
Michael Andrew
“Today was a learning experience for sure. While doing our video that we shot from the week before, we decided we needed to do voiceovers. The studio where we were at, however, was being used, so we were unable to use those microphones and record them. So like a real filmmaker, when we encountered a problem like this, we thought out of the box for an alternative idea. We went into a quiet room, set up a camera very close to the person speaking, and recorded voiceovers for every scene. Then we went back to edit it. It was an interesting lesson and I learned a lot from it, especially learning how to cope with situations.”
Becky Nathan
“I’ll be getting a work schedule this week at the studio. They’ve done everything from Avatar to Jurassic park. Tomorrow I’m putting on the glove that Robert Downey Jr. wears in Iron Man. So stoked! I met some incredible people and I also made another great contact. It was honestly one of the most incredible days of my life!”
Adam Kevin
“Even small shoots had big takeaways — like the value of backups.”
Jamie F.
“I didn’t know how to label gear until I worked with the team hands-on.”
Sasha T.
“My first day, I was very nervous. I was given a script to breakdown. I was able to get it done within the day, but I brought it home to double check my work. On my second day, I was given to script. The first one, I was asked to read it & write a summary about it & give my personal opinion about the script. The second script, I was asked to breakdown again. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first week at the film studio & can’t wait until next week!!”
Jaxon Riley
“My mentor is very knowledgeable and passionate about what he does, only motivating me more.”
Brian Hobday
“Over the past five weeks I’ve been very busy, working my summer job, keeping up with my film business, and meeting with my mentor at Backseat any chance I get. My summer job is full time so I am only off on Tuesdays and Thursdays so I haven’t had a whole lot of time to meet with my mentor lately, but one highlight over the past few weeks was our shoot in Camden, NJ for “But Deliver Us From Evil”. This is the same movie we did down in North Carolina and now we are working to get some final shots needed to complete the film. Doug and I are also working on a Behind The Scenes video for “But Deliver Us From Evil” which should be done with-in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for the video in my upcoming blog posts!”
Luke Charles
“The equipment room became my classroom — I learned setup and storage.”
Sarah M.
“Helping reset for every take showed me the rhythm of a real set.”
Taylor N.
“In Chapter 2 I watched a lot of movies, not counting the twelve we had to watch and write about. I also got to experience and participate in the progress of doing a casting. it was very interesting seeing the steps that had to be taken for a casting. I did not expect it to be as fun as it actually was. The company that my mentor owns, got hired to do a shooting for a company named OPMA. In this shooting I got to experience what it takes to carry out a task, that when compared to a movie doesn’t seem like a big deal, but when compared to what other video production companies do, it was a very big deal. During this shooting I learned things such as, how to work a boom stick, how to bounce lights, what were the name of some of the camera shots we used, I even learned a little about makeup. Over all I learned a lot from the movies I watched, but I also learned a lot more from the hands on experience that was provided by my mentor.”
Robert Thomas
“I’m almost nearing the end of this program and I can already say that I learned a whole lot doing this, more than I learned going to college!”
William Laura
“I started going to college for film production, but as time went on I realized that I wasn’t gaining the knowledge or making the right connections I knew I would need if I wanted to achieve my goals. I needed to find something that would provide a “hands on” learning experience, as well as opportunities to work with people who were already in the industry. That’s when I started looking into The Film Connection.”
Dorothy Luke
“I finally understood grip gear when I had to fix it mid-shoot.”
Jesse Y.
“We rotated crew positions — now I know how each department supports the shoot.”
Morgan V.
“During the week with my mentor I did transcribing for a film called “All Screwed Up”. It was actually kind of fun. It’s very tedious, however, I earned film credit for the project! That week part of the lesson was about script breakdowns. So Anastasia went over the process of how to complete a breakdown and explained that it’s necessary to keep the production organized and in budget. That week Wednesday, I accompanied the producers to a screening at the Friars Club. The film was terrible, to say the least. But I learned a lot about production value and what not to do to make my project bad. The following week, I finished transcribing the film and began the process of doing a breakdown for one of the studios projects, “Walking Dead.” Also my work on my mentors’ last film continues and this is something else I am earning film credit for. I’m enjoying working with both of my mentor, as they truly do give me a lot of responsibility and I’m treated like part of the Company.”

“I really have been enjoying my experience with this Film Connection program. I think it is definitely the one-on-one time I have with my mentor that helps out the most in my progression into the Film Industry. Not only this, but learning from someone who has done this type of work for a long time, alike my mentor, who is a true professional. I have had the pleasure of helping out on two short films and even a feature film which is REALLY exciting! This is definitely something I didn’t think I would be doing before I started this program. I have now also gained the confidence I need to make a feature film of my own. What really surprised me about the Film Connection was how far I have come within the program. Before the program, I thought that I could get in the industry with only my writing. However, now I know I have the skills to get a job in the industry, regardless the position. I had no idea how to light a scene and now I know that I can do it myself if needed to and my mentor is a great help in this process. Thankfully he is extremely patient and is, and will always be, there for me if I have, any questions, as he continues to currently do so. This is an experience that was worth every penny, and I will do it all over again in a heartbeat.”

“Man, oh man, what a week this has been! I get to the loading dock, to help put stuff in the film truck, and I find out from the man in charge of this shoot, that we are going to the beach for an Ambervision Sunglasses commercial and I would be doing the teleprompter.”

“For the past couple of weeks I have been helping my mentor with one of her films. I guess you can say that I am helping coordinate and run a group of animators who are working on some animations for this film she has in the works. I’ve had the opportunity to talk with both the director and VFX director and get acquainted with the project and what they expect or want at this particular point in time. Everything has been going great, we have a couple of animators who are working hard and are excited about contributing to the film. I am excited as well, I didn’t think that I would be working on something this soon in the Film Connection. This is a really great experience and opportunity to further my knowledge in leading a group through this journey and contribute to the film’s success. I have also been reading the lectures and sitting in on my mentors’ conference calls with numerous people. Being able to watch and listen to her talk to directors and writers is really a big help as to how to work in building good relationships in this business. I had the opportunity as well to meet and talk to the director she worked with in the past and will work with in the very near future. I’m excited to see what we will do in our next meeting.”

“Today at the studio I was able to start entering dubs on to Excel and make some tape and shipping labels for all of them. I then made a priority list and put all of the client forms in order. The spots were for Credit Guard Spanish, Complete Classic Rock, 25th Anniversary Rock, Roll Hall of Fame, and Love Alive. The Formats were DVD, DVCPro25 Beta SP and the clients were Relient Media LLC, Revshare, Time Life, and Credit Guard of America. My mentor and I then moved on to have an in-depth discussion about the camera I have and if I would be able to make something substantial enough with it. I also brought up that I have officially started work on a short film and they gave me pointers on where I should start looking for different things to improve the Production. One of my mentors’ gave me an amazing Website called Soundrangers.com, which is a lot of stock sounds that you can buy or get for free. This works amazing because they have everything you would need to start sounds you would not easily get on a low budget film. Talking about my short film with my mentor came about that my mentors’ also offered that if it came down to it I could use the V.O. booth at the studio for my film, which is amazing because that’s a huge asset if I really need a place to get the perfect kind of sound. The following day I went into the studio again, which turned out to be a short day, however, it put a fire in my step on working with my short film and now daily I am working towards the goal of putting it out there. I am really excited about the workbook the Film Connection assigned me because it is also in the directing portion and I’m learning a lot to prepare myself for my film and I can’t wait to start filming each and every scene. I love the studio the Film Connection has placed me in, as it is a real studio where I can learn and grow. It is also making me much more confident to start my own film projects alike the one I’m working on now. The Film Connection program has really been life changing because before this I was just working in retail.”

“I was able to set up an interview with one of the Artist Producer/ DJ. The goal of the short interview was to get a tutorial of how this Artist produces his own film. I was lucky to get the interview done at his house. This was a new experience to me since I’ve never interview or film someone at their own house. The environment was slightly small but I had to get creative to the job done. I was able to film the footage and get the interview done within 45 minutes. In addition, it was my first time getting this kind of job done by myself. My mentor Anthony Barkdoll believed that it will be great experience to get this job done on my own since I’ve done it before with his assistance. I was very excited to execute this job on my own and get a feel of how I perform in this kind of assignments.
The equipment I use was a standard FS 100 Sony camera Manual Lens, Monopad, 2 batteries, 1 ARRI Light, wireless microphone. The interview and footage was successful and excited about next week interview. Next week interview is very important because this Artist/Event Coordinator, Producer, Graphic Designer, DJ is a very important piece to this project. It took a little bit of work to schedule this interview but got it done. I’ll be sharing with you on my next blog how this assignment went.”

“At the beginning the week when I got to my mentors house and we tested his new sound equipment, using it plugged into his Canon 60D. The sound was pretty good but there’s no headphone jack in his camera so it’s hard to monitor the sound while shooting a video. He also showed me a short film that was pretty cool. I don’t remember the name but the shots were really artistic and well lit!
A few hours later we drove over The Phoenix Restaurant in Bend, as my mentor had been asked to make another commercial for Bend’s Where to Eat Guide’s website. When we got there we sat down with the manager and figured out what we wanted for the commercial’s voiceover, then my mentor recorded that while I went outside and got some exterior shots of the restaurant. Once I was done with that I walked around and got some videos of the bar and the kitchen and staff interacting with customers. I used my new Canon T3i, and I was surprised and pleased with how comfortable and confident I was when I was getting the shots and changing the settings on my camera so that I got the best image. Once we had all the shots we needed we went back to my mentors’ house and he downloaded the footage that was on my camera to his computer.
A few days later I went over to have my session in Final Cut Pro. My mentor contacted a well-known studio to ask them to go over all the basics of editing with me, so I arrived at this new studio ready to learn. When I got there the engineer asked me about myself, and I told him that I’m just trying to learn all about filmmaking so that I can decide which area of it I’d like to go into. Then I asked him about his filmmaking journey. He went to film school in Seattle, WA, and then decided to open his own business and become a ‘commercial producer’, as in he makes videos commercially and goes out on hire. He recently went down to Argentina to make a feature length documentary about Malbec wine, which I was able to watch at the Bend Film Festival.
He then proceeded to show me his editing suite after we had talked for a few minutes. It had three huge computer monitors for him to edit with and then three TV screens for him to watch his edited footage on. It was awesome. He showed me a project that he had shot the previous weekend and had just finished editing. It was a commercial for a healthcare clinic. He then walked me through the steps he had taken during the editing process, showing me how he organizes his footage and ‘promotes’ clips to help narrow down what he wants to use. He told me to try to get as familiar as I can with all the shortcuts that can be used in Final Cut because it will save me lots of time and it’s very important to be able to edit quickly. He showed me some mistakes in the footage that he had to fix with Adobe After Effects and told me to become familiar with Photo Shop because After Effects is very similar to it. I did have some questions about video format which he answered thoroughly.
After showing me the basics of editing Sky talked for a while about how he learned about making videos and said that the best way to learn is to go out and shoot videos and then edit them and then, if I have any questions, figure out the answers to them by searching on the internet or looking in books or talking to people. I asked him about making the wine documentary and he explained how he went down to Argentina three times: once to do research, once to shoot the interviews with the winemakers, and once to get b-roll that enhanced what the interviewees said. He showed me how he stuck up about a thousand sticky notes on his wall when he was deciding how to shape the story for the documentary. He also told me to watch movies with a discerning eye, but, again, the best way to learn is by doing.

“At the beginning of the week my mentor called me to advise he wanted me to come in earlier in the week than expected. My mentor was shooting a documentary on war vets that day and wanted me to get some behind the scene and production experience. After agreeing that I could come in, and that we would also go over and review my Lesson assigned to me by the Film Connection, after the shoot. As the day progressed with my mentor I realized that during the beginning, as well as the end of the shoot, there was a lot of time put into setting up as well as getting everyone settle down and deciding what was next. My mentor was head of the crew, then there was a man with the floating camera, another of my mentors controlled the shot another angles, and next to him was another employee holding the boom mic. From my observations today there is a lot of communication going on, as there are a lot of little errors due to lighting, positions and background noise that need to be fixed during a professional shoot. Mainly everything went smoothly though, and at the end of the shoot everyone was pretty tired. But I still continued to keep my energy up, continuing to assist my mentor and the staff with the cleanup of all the items as well as components put back in their secure places. As promised, once the shoot was wrapped my mentor and I went back into his office for our one-on-time review of my Lesson assignment. We went through this is great detail and I wrote every little bit down. Looking back on this day I really feel as though I have learned a lot from my observations, as well as assisting in the smaller tasks. Everything is really progressing great in the Film Connection program, as working with my mentor is great. He is easy to interact with, and it is just a pleasure to be there in the studio working with him”

“I spent two days in the studio this week for Lesson 2, it was very exciting. We had a movie premiere at the beginning of the week, and I was assigned to be the Assistant Coordinator for the night. It went wonderfully! Two days later I ran the cameras for a job we had. It was for a client that had an internet class and I filmed her classes for most of the day. After that my mentor and I had a meeting with a group that pitched us an idea for a documentary and reality TV series. It went very well. This week was full of hands on experience. I loved it!”

“It has been very informative working on this set. It has been interesting to see how relationships for. And how quickly these strong bonds can be made within a department. Many of the people might have meet each other before working on this project but by the end of it many would go to bat for each other. It has been an interesting progression watching as this develops. That being said I am sure that there will be a similar process on the next set. Where people don’t really know each other and will have to prove that they have value to each other. The other thing that I am really looking forward to is seeing the final product. It will be very educational to see what the fruits of our labor look like on screen. I know what some of the choices people made look like in the moment, but the real question is how they will play on screen after we have had some time away to digest the scene that we had just built. It will also be educational to see how the effects that we making turn out on screen.”

“I went on another shoot with my mentor this Wednesday that was for Wells Fargo. There was a sort of “career day” for multiple students from different high schools. My job was to tail the students that were coming to check out the Wells Fargo bank in downtown, Albuquerque. This was being done all around the country so Wells Fargo could have multiple tapes to form into one “feature” to show how what they are doing for high school students. When we got inside I learned about White balance, and how a shot can be ruined unless it is checked whenever you are entering a differently lit area with a camera. I followed them, room to room as the students were run through the different opportunities Wells Fargo offered like college payments. My mentor and I then went to a private room to allow a young woman, who had set up the whole little event at this particular bank, to conduct an interview with one of the gentlemen who took part in talking with the kids. My mentor, the sound handler, and I set up all the equipment before anyone got there, including the monitor, tripod, video camera and lighting. So we got through that portion of the shoot very quickly. After the interview was over, the lady who was asking the questions needed to be interviewed as well. I got the opportunity to ask her a few preselected questions as my mentor filmed. Later, we stopped to grab a late lunch before we shipped the tape out at FedEx to the address we had been given. I am still putting in hours at my mentors’ production company as well, which has been fun. A few days later I did a project with the sound engineer at the studio, who runs my mentor’s company when my actually mentor, who is the owner, is on shoots that involved taking/uploading dozens of photographs to Final Cut Pro and creating a montage. This was for a family who had lost a loved one and wanted a reel of pictures on DVD to remember her by. My mentor and I went through songs that the family had requested to be put in the video and selected a few good ones. Later that day, a light my mentor needed for a shoot had broken so we needed to swap it out with a backup. I removed the speed ring from the light and reattached it to another one. I am learning a lot from my mentor and getting along with him very well.”

“I went and observed my mentor as he shot a film video for a collaboration of about seven artists. I stood uneasy at first and felt out of my element as I watched my mentor smoothly go through his self-taught shot list. Then we went on break as we were waiting for the last two artists to show. I had some shot ideas for an earlier artist who had a verse that inspired me to brainstorm. I asked my mentor if I could dabble with some ideas. He obliged as I took over the camera and grabbed the artist from before. I suddenly abandoned all my inhibitions and sunk into a comfortable flow. The artist appreciated my view on detail and my spontaneity. No one really talked to me much that day except for this particular artist. He asked my name and shook my hand, telling me ‘thanks for taking the extra time with me man’. It was though I was literally standing outside of a box that I didn’t know the way in to. Then I grabbed a camera and was invited into this ‘world’. THIS is why I want nothing but to make movies. It’s my way in! It gives me my voice.”
Brandon Mary

“Then we talked about me bringing in the new camera I am getting. He says that we will be able to use it during our sessions and he will teach me everything he knows about it. “The camera became an extension of my point of view.”

“I’ve been working with my mentor to improve my directorial skills; particularly my cinematography and reasoning behind it. I realized early on that I get so into working with the camera, that I forget to think things through all the way, and end up with poorly executed shots that look truly, embarrassingly amateur, by my own admission. I’ve started trying to take his advice to heart: remembering to set up the camera properly, always using the tripod and never holding the camera or zooming in or out unless necessary; making notes about what I want in each shot and why, and taking those notes with me into the field to reference to keep myself organized and on track.”
Jacob Evan
“I finally started lighting with story in mind, not just what looks cool.”

“I started my job at WPTV News Channel 5 around week 18 and that really interfered with trying to get together with my mentor, Todd. I start my job at 4 in the morning, including the weekends. Taking naps becomes very important after work, I say with humor. I will say though, after two months of working here, externing Ko-Mar has really prepared me for what I need to do. I know how to handle the stress of the situation for a long period of time, thinking and moving on my feet, and enjoying the world of film/TV.”

“Never in my life had seen a real shooting camera with so many different lenses. It was a job to assemble the equipment as well as disassemble them and carry them back and forth between the trunk of a vehicle and the set. The focus of the lens was able to be controlled with a remote, and the camera was connected to the monitor wirelessly. In the first half of the shoot, the duty of the slate management was my responsibility but then I was given the job to handle the remote control to move the focus of the camera between actors and objects.”

“I have to admit I was very nervous and excited to be in a production studio and learn from one of the best film directors in the industry. My first lesson was on the camera, which was very interesting and a little complicated. My mentor really broke it down to me little by little. I was able to work with the camera myself using both the techniques from the book and a few of my mentor’s techniques. I can honestly say I left our session understanding how to not only turn my camera on, but actually shoot footage!”

“In this lesson I got to learn the stages of production and what they do. I learned development, financing, pre-production, production, post-production, and marketing and distribution. Another big thing that the chapter talked about was editing. You go from the director’s vision of a film on set to an editor’s vision on the computer. It all goes back to having a team. Without one you wouldn’t get far in the industry. When I was with Jason, we talked about my movie pitch and what I needed to work on. He saw that my script had paragraph’s that were too long so he suggested I make them shorter so people reading it wouldn’t get jammed up. He also taught me a way to make a shotlist. He drew a picture of a scene on paper and showed me where I needed to put each camera in order to have more options when editing. All I have to do now is work on my skit for this coming week as well as an updated shotlist in order to finish filming on time.”

“This week we had a shoot in Los Angeles for the World Radio Summit. The event was held at the Roosevelt Hotel across the street from the Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. This was a 2-camera shoot for a company that was presenting their product in one of the sessions. Following my mentors direction, I first shot some B-roll of the event and then climbed on one of the platforms with the rest of the cameras and shot the session!”

“The first day of this week, I went with Adventure Productions on a shoot for the Home Depot. This was the most important shoot I had been a part of I helped some but learned a lot from the producers there. They showed me how to set up shots using one camera and making it look like multiple. I also paid attention to how they got the person on camera to act. They were very personable to get the talents best reactions to the questions. I helped set up lights and carry equipment that day, and learned a lot!”

“We actually just finished a short film, last week. I was producing with Sam (mentor) we had just competed a feature film script. We had an audition with actors and actresses and we are ready to start our project (Titled: ‘Live Free OR Die’ to be partially shot in Egypt.). We also have some projects on April, May and June of this year. A short film and another feature film, Sam will be directing and I will be assisting. This will start shooting in May, and in June I will be directing another short film (Titled: ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’)”

“The lesson was about the higher-arch of film production. What roles there are in the crew. I found the lesson very educational. It gave me an idea about what jobs might become available to me and what position I may assume as I progress in my career. I never realized that so much responsibility could fall on just one member of a film crew, like the 1st assistant director. It is a role I look forward to one day challenging myself with.”

“Of the different sets that I have been on it has been very interesting to note the environment that is created. It seems to me that the environment that has been created on set comes down from on top. That the tone of the set is set by the people in charge, mostly the director. And there is a trickle-down effect from how the director approaches the movie that they are working on. If they take it very seriously the people that are working on their film will take it seriously. If the people in power are willing to listen and work with the crew that creates a whole new environment. It is one thing to see it from the sidelines, and how it influences the different aspects of a film set, but it is another challenge to notice it while you are the one in the position of power. It makes me wonder what kind of tone and environment that I will set when I get to direct my own projects.”

“Tonight, I met with my actors and Dan. Dan got there early so we could look at the space for my scene and figure out some shots. When my actors arrived, we made introductions and started reading. I read for my lead actor since he told me at the last minute he couldn’t make it. We hammered out a schedule for rehearsing and shooting. Unfortunately, our timetable didn’t work for my lead. So, he’s out. And I’m in. Me. I am the lead. It has come to this. I literally have no other option. I need to get this done. We rehearse this Sunday and shoot next Sunday. Ideally, I’d have more time for editing and post, but I’m honestly just happy to get this thing moving!”

“I had my first session last week Friday. It was great! My mentor is very knowledgeable and taught me so much within one day. He makes the environment very relaxed and comfortable. During our first session we went over the entire production and development of a movie. He taught me about a treatment and synopsis for a screenplay. Also, we went over the timeline and structure of how a movie is made, starting with the treatment. He showed me some of the programs he uses for editing and writing and showed me an example. I got to get a feel of Final Draft Pro. and Final Cut. Finally, we went over a film they are making. I got to see some of the script and what the directors treatment looks like.”

“For my first official day with the Film Connection, where I went into the studio for my first official day with my mentor. There were a lot of work in the industry, and got to meet with professionalism filmmakers. It is a great fundamental progress in my career, I have learned a lot so far from my mentor, as he is one of those types that hold onto true professionalism. As my Lessons progress with my mentor I have meet professional directions in New York, received professional appearances at them, and come early Summer I will be directing the film and my mentor will produce it. Thank you really goes out to my mentor, as he has now granted me opportunity to get to get my success goal to move forward to the professional level. I’m proud of him as he is such very nice person. My mentor and I are planning for many projects coming up I’m so excited, and thanks to my mentor he has given me all the trust to be his assistant 1st director, very proud, and looking to working hard and harder to accomplish my career to the professional level.”

Peyton B.
“On Wednesday we began work at 9am at the Ford’s Fitness center. On this day I worked on recording sound. My mentor was brought on to be a camera man during this production. One lesson I will take away from this experience is that a director must communicate with his/her crew. The director did not do this with us and on the first day we did not capture what he wanted. I believe that it is important to communicate with everyone beforehand to insure that you as the director get what you want.”

“For this past week I’ve learned how to color a video, meaning add color, and brightness effects to it. I colored the wedding video my mentor has me working on, so if it looks O.K. I should be done, or very close to done with it! It’s amazing to me how different, and brighter, or dimmer, you can make a video look, just by editing it. I didn’t know you could make coloring effects, before I learned this. I’m going to meet her today, and I’ll see what she thinks about what I’ve colored.”
William Diana

“On Tuesday, August 11th I met with my mentor Joe on a beautiful sunny day in Minnesota. We have both been crazy busy, me with my homework and him on some errands but we made the time to get together in spite of our schedules. That day we talked about my chapter 1 and 2 quizzes and also I had the chance to go to his studio to see where he does the editing for his projects. He uses the Apple program Final Cut and I find it similar to the Sony editing software I recently purchased. So we spent the majority of the time looking at and exploring the features of his editing software. It was eye opening to what you can do with the software. There are so many functions and even though he showed me a few of them such as putting footage on a timeline and then editing it by adding transition here and there and also looping the sound to match the footage made my mind swim. He made it look easy since he has been doing that for quite some time and I look forward to when I too can make it look easy…might take awhile but I will get there:). Joe also gave me a small project to work on with my new editing software – the footage we filmed at the White Bear Lake YMCA. He made a backup copy of some of the footage and tasked me with making a movie with the footage he gave me. It is quite the challenge but I feel I am up to the task. Like a rookie quarterback starting in place of an injured veteran player I must make my editing debut.Very excited to see what I can come up with! Stay tuned for more later…”

“Learning continuity editing was like learning how to think clearly.”

“This week I got to sit behind the wheel and do some hands on editing all by myself! For the second of Holly’s film videos, Shane allowed me to sculpt the whole thing from start to finish. We laid down the film and I began cutting and dropping footage. Again, I could see that the editing process wouldn’t be too hard for me because of the organization of the footage. Everything was easily accessible and so I managed to make some pretty good progress before we called it a day. The first draft is not quite finished yet but Shane seemed very pleased with the progress I made. Its incredibly exciting to be behind the wheel and having a chance to creatively craft this narrative in whatever I see it with all the components made ready and available to me. As excited and proud as I am, I cannot help but think of the long hours Holly put in when she wrote the lyrics and the film and envisioned it herself, and I cannot help but think of the long hours Shane put it in to shoot it, and the long hours he put in to be able to afford the equipment we shot it with. Its a very awesome experience to work on something that is such a massive collaboration of talents and energy. I’m eager to see how Holly likes the videos we’ve prepared for her.”

“I was hired by Victory Studios and I am so excited. This studio is able to provide me with all the means to be a successful student coming from this school. I am going to be taught a lot to do with editing. This is the department I feel I can love and have so much room for improvement. Can’t wait to learn 3D animation and keep on learning filming. Thanks my mentor for going out of your way to accommodate me for bettering my education.”
Charles William
“Today at the studio I learned about the important aspects of organizing your media, before you put it together. If you are disorganized than you are going to have a tough life in this position. The experience itself is more than I can ever learn in any other school. This is how to learn film editing.”
John Julian
“After cutting a few minutes of footage without pausing, I went back to the beginning and used the extend function to move my edit points around. I was afraid if I didn’t get the camera switch close enough to the edit point I wanted, it would be difficult to get it where I wanted it. This was not the case, it was extremely easy to go back and polish up the sequence and I think multi-cam editing could actually be a really good exercise to train myself to edit more quickly and to recognize appropriate edit points faster. Whenever the gallery hosts an event, they tend to have at least one camera recording it. I think I am going to start setting up my own camera as well just so I can practice this style of editing on a regular basis.”
Brian Angela
“My pacing improved after I stopped editing to music and started editing to story.”
Jordan E.
“Getting used to Premiere made me feel ready for freelance work.”

“To me, having to cut and piece together film videos shot from that many angles was like putting a puzzle together, except I had to create the idea of what the final puzzle was going to look like instead of having one already done to go off of. The two videos that I ended up finishing were so good the band posted them on all of their social media sites. I absolutely loved this project and I feel like I learned so much from them.”
Ethan Emily
“This course made me see the editor as a co-author.”
Jesse H.
“I didn’t think I could cut drama until I built one emotional beat at a time.”
Jamie L.
“For this past week, I got a lot of the wedding ceremony part edited and sound synched up. I’ve just been working really hard on putting everything together in the wedding video my mentor gave me to edit. I took a long time trying to synch up sound because I forgot the trick she showed me, which is expanding the track to synch the sound correctly. That makes it so much easier.”
Isaac Rachel
“Watching an editor cut around a bad take showed me what finesse really is.”
Drew Y.
“I used to think editing was tech — now I see it as storytelling.”

“In this week’s session we continued to explore editing with two separate projects that we filmed several weeks ago. I was able to continue to input some ideas that I have and contribute more to both projects. I am continuing to learn new techniques and different methods of editing. I have come to realize that editing in itself is not particularly difficult only that learning how to edit and becoming a professional demands the time input above all else. The longer a person edits the more skilled they will become and I am excited to continue on this journey. The lesson this week covered storyboards and the director’s workbook. We are now exploring the position of a director, a position that Jack specializes in. Our sessions are becoming more interesting as we go along and I am still learning substantial amounts about film production just in more detail. We are also working with other artists in the area that my mentor knows. Through these new people I am meeting, I am getting more contacts and learning from others in the business as well.
I am really enjoying the process, the hard work, and the time spent trying to figure things out.”
Kitty Pryde
“Cutting a scene for someone else showed me how to serve the story, not my ego.”
Quinn H.
“I started seeing editing as directing after taking this course.”
Drew T.
“This week my mentor and I went around Charlotte, North Carolina, getting footage that can be used for many projects we are working on at the production studio. Things like road signs, welcome signs, crowd shots, and the airport. It was great; I work directly with the productions, getting to operate the camera for most of the day. This actual shoot was supposed to be a green screen shoot for EZWay Auto Sales. However, it has been rescheduled for this Wednesday. Since no one else will be using the facility until then, we got to leave the green screen up. However, the lights were rented so we had to strike them and return them to the rental place. Afterwards all of this was prepared, my mentor and I sat down to have our one-on-one training for Lesson 8 assigned to me by the Film Connection program. Also, I really wanted to let the program know that I saw my 15-second edit of the EZ Way commercial on the Air! It was our local CBS affiliate showing it during The Mentalist. It is just so cool to see something I have done actually on Television!”
Shane Killian

“I officially transferred to the Editing Concentration this week and I am looking forward to receiving my new textbook and a copy of Final Cut Pro X. I am finally getting into the swing of things as my Mentor, Wes, started to break down the neat building blocks of this powerful editing program. I must admit I am a little anxious as I feel that I still have so much to learn. I really want to learn most of the technical ins and outs of the software so that I can finally focus on what really matters — the creative storytelling process. I look forward to that moment when my knowledge will be enough to finally liberate me, and I can start creating works of art. Thank goodness my Mentor Wes Cobb has a very strong grasp of Final Cut Pro X.”
William Kyle
“My mentor reviewed the editing work I had been doing since we last met. She says that she thinks I have the hang of it and gave me some tips on how to improve what I did have. I had a LOT of cuts in the beginning of the project because I was trying to get out all of the “ums” and “you knows”, but she imparted the knowledge that it’s best to leave some of those in there to benefit the look of the video (not so jumpy). I couldn’t agree more. It looks tons better since I’ve followed that direction. I’m not done with it, but I know it will only continue to get better.”
Jordan Blake
“Color correction showed me how mood is controlled in subtle ways.”
Avery K.
“I finally understood the power of a reaction shot.”
Quinn P.
“This week we continued to work on the BC apprentice house and made final adjustments to each room. We ended out the week with a shoot in Riverside, NJ where I was hired to film the full Reenactment of Jesus being nailed to the cross. Doug Sakmann provided all of the special effects work while I was behind the camera capturing it all! The shoot went smoothly and we are now in the post production editing process which I am also taking full control of. I hope to have a first draft of the video done by early next week.”
Austin Megan
“At this point I am starting to get confident in my ability to edit. While the work I do on my own is still nowhere near a professional editors is, I am at least feeling competent in making changes to video clips pretty quickly and efficiently, in both FCP 7 and Premier Pro.”

Marley K.
“Being pushed to explain every cut made me intentional with my transitions.”
Peyton W.
“My mentor advised me to pay attention, and be engaged in how you edit – listen to the words. Editing happens in your head. Knowing every word is key to putting it in a nice sequence. There are no small jobs in this business, you should leave yourself notes when logging video and make it as if you’ve never seen it before. I really appreciated this advice.”
Austin Charlotte
“This past week has been hectic. I am in the process of transferring to a new job that will give me a chance to edit some video. I am really looking forward to getting to watch two editors working today and see how they differ in the work methods.”

“I have learned a lot about post film these last few weeks and it has inspired me to start recording some post sound effects and to put them online. I’m starting a library of high quality sounds on Pond5 soon, I’ve also been in contact with a composer/post film supervisor that works in the studio I’m interning at. I’ve sent him some of my scores so I’m waiting to see what he says about them!”

“At my last couple sessions I have become more and more familiar with terms and what certain techniques are called. I’ve learned how to properly use bins and how much easier it is to import and label items. Labeling makes everything so much easier and organized. It can save lots and lots of stress and chaos. I’ve also been able to edit through footage on final cut pro. I’m getting more and more comfortable with short-cut keys and their purposes. I still have a lot to learn but so far I’m excited and ready to learn more next week.”

“So today was the day for editing my video. I went into it very nervous and anxious because I never had any experience in this area at all and anything to do with the working of electronics is definitely not my forte in the least. Mr. Triscari had made sure to stress to me that in the real world, to work with an editor is VERY expensive and so it is an absolute must that when you go into edit, you have done all the necessary preparation. So after coming up with the idea, writing the synopsis, storyboarding everything, shooting the actual interviews and B roll, this was going to be the final step in bringing the image I had in my head into a tangible film.
I remember when we first starting prep for doing the editing, I was a little shocked and overwhelmed with the amount of the decisions that needed to be made every step of the way. What’s the film? What’s the visual? Is there a better shot that could be used? Should sound effects be added? It literally is a blank canvas and as the producer you are brushing on every stroke. But, the second time around, it dawned on me that this whole “editing thing” could be really fun. This is where your creativity could kick into full speed and the sky is the limit. My feelings towards editing and my perspective on it took a total 180 degree turn.
Myself, Mr. Triscari, and Ryan, a staff member at the studio, sat down for a little over 4 hours and went step by step through the whole video and put together a rough cut. I definitely saw firsthand how time consuming it is but how absolutely VITAL this step of the process is as well. It was a priceless experience to have to be put on the spot like that about making decisions for what I wanted and to really be forced to step up to the plate and not sit back and let someone else make the decisions for me. I also saw that even when you do wear the “hat” of the producer, it definitely does not mean you know everything and can’t take someone else’s advice. If you are working with good people who you know you can trust, there needs to be some give and take as well in regards to the decisions that are made in the editing room. I felt like it was a priceless learning experience to see what it was like to be sitting in that position.”
Joseph Smith

“This past week I was able to attend the American Film market. It was an experience to see all of these movies brought together in one place to be bought and sold. I found it very interesting to see how people market their movies to the buyers at the event; to see some of the things that the sellers thought that the buyers would be interested in. It was also interesting to see the human side of the American Film Market. Normally when thinking of buying and selling product the images of cold calculated business types comes to mind. The market was not like this. There were many times when I saw two old friends bump into each other and start catching up, with the conversation never broaching the topic of business. It was a refreshing feeling thinking that even at a place where movies are bought and sold to the world people are still being friendly.”
Max Helen
“The business curriculum taught me how to stay creative and still be taken seriously.”
Quinn H.

“It’s been such an amazing journey and a great learning experience. Today we discussed the next steps for The Closing we are filming the rest of it on the 5th for the SAG actors because we have to sign up with SAG. Tom mentioned a website for festivals called withoutabox.com. We fixed my resume and he mentioned that he emailed production companies, Producers and DP’s for potential job opportunities just waiting to hear back

“The second half of the day today, I was able to sit and observe my mentor working with two other MIHP employees to put together a pitch for a possible television show. I got a chance to watch how quickly a piece can be put together and how much frankenbiting and manipulating footage can change the context of what was actually going on in the footage. Watching this process makes me realize how much I have to learn.”

“Today was unlike any other day so far in the Film Connection. So, I actually got to go to my mentor house today and see his majestic home. While there it was an eventful day. We had a photographer over to assist with an entire photo shoot. I was there the entire time working as part of the team. Then, after the shoot was completed, I was fortunate enough to meet his lovely wife and two beautiful children and really get a sense for what he is like outside of the studio as well. Next, we went into his private office and began forming my own business website, brainstorming on how it should look, as well as how my mentor and I wanted it to function in a way that’s best for me. Moreover, prior to today my mentor had given me a feature film to watch and report back on what I thought of it. It was a film that had circulated through a couple film festivals, and actually garnered some attention. After viewing it, I knew what to avoid in order to not be seen as an extremely amateur filmmaker, and made four pages of criticisms. I definitely felt like Francois Truffaut in the manner of being a harsh critic, in his early days as a critic at Cahiers du Cinema. My mentor also gave me his Variety magazines to read over, which I’m grateful for because I love keeping up-to-date with whatever is going on in the film and television industry. Moreover, guess what! My mentor gave me his first assistant job, which was to find contact information of certain executives in the television network. It was somewhat difficult to track down some of these important figure’s emails, but I seem to have done the task well. We discussed about my short ideas, and agreed that my first short will be too long, so now I am developing my second short.”
Steven Buchanan

Thomas Mariola
“I learned how to break down the script and how to precisely budget each and every shot of each and every scene. My mentor is excellent and has run his production company for over 30 years. “This week my mentor and I started to finalize the Kickstarter account we started. We are just waiting on the synopsis for the script, which I just received. When I meet with my mentor next week we will put that in Kickstarter and submit the project. I showed my mentor the potential directors I had in mind and he liked one in particular, so we emailed him and he has responded back to use and I will soon send him the new script I have. My mentor and I also had another director in mind who he has actual worked with. We then went on LA casting and submitted the two main characters. I have received many responses and have gone over them all. My mentor and I set up dates for audition and have scheduled the shot for the Film in roughly for exactly 3 months. We went over homework but I did not really have any questions because it was a really easy Lesson. So when we meet next week we should set up meetings with the directors and choose the actors for the auditions. We’re meeting on Tuesday after I get back in town from visiting my family in Utah. A thanks goes out to the Film Connection, which is so great. I have really learned a lot from what I already kind of knew before joining the program so I am just so happy that we are doing this project so I can see the process in which to take when producing a film. For me, hands-on is the best way for me to learn and that’s exactly what we are doing. I have no complaints this is an amazing experience. Thanks so much Film Connection.”
Rachel Gentry

“In my first lesson with my mentor I started out by learning about the history of moving images on screen from its inception to modern day. During my mentoring sessions, I learned more about budgeting for a project, it was tedious, but I still enjoyed the process. It seems that everything that has to be meticulously budgeted for were things I knew. However, for some reason never thought about it. So, this has been an eye-opening experience. On my second day for the week with my mentor, I was introduced to a documentary project being tackled by the studio. I was given the task of finding footage and photographs of the subject pertaining to the documentary, compiling information from various sources. I didn’t think it would be so much work, but it’s difficult to not only find information on someone who has managed to stay elusive to the media, but also to track down the sources of the footage and figure out how to contact these people and obtain the proper rights and permissions to use it. I’m still working on this project and over all this week with my mentor I’ve started to understand how much work, effort, and sweat equity goes into pre-production. And although it’s a painful process, it’s a good kind of pain. Like my mentor said, it’s like being confronted with a mystery or a puzzle and figuring out how to solve it and once the pieces come together, it’s a good feeling knowing that you made that happen.”

“I just had a stroke of luck meeting up with a small production company who wants to make my movie :). Gear, editing, even actors. All for free, yo! One of the guys is a former RRFC student too.”
Hela Odinsdottir
“I got to see how the same footage could be manipulated to tell the same story involving two people in many different ways. I was able to see how each person’s sound effects and/or film choice enhanced the sequence and how the same story could be told, and told well, from many different perspectives. I also learned that sometimes, what is unseen can be as effective or more effective than what is actually shown on screen.”
Michael Owen
“Today I was able to have a deep, educational, and detailed conversation on the lesson I have just finished. I always get the most incredible tips and insight from my mentors. The lesson talked about mythmakers and storytellers, and my mentors were able to incorporate much more to the book. Through their personal tastes and experience I now understand that one must first master previous rules and genres before beginning to bend the rules.”
Kevin Robert
“Each short taught me how to let go of perfection and focus on the story.”
Peyton J.
“The learning of film and its intricacies from others and reading about it, and how much of an impact it has on me as an individual, is what gives me incentive to keep pushing forward. I’m not trying to outdo others who are learning or in the same field as I am, I’m trying to outdo myself. As Robert Rodriguez once said, ‘Work hard, and be scary.’”
Alyssa Seth

“On Tuesday, I started shooting my video, which couldn’t have gone better. The weather was perfect. The location was absolutely beautiful. My actress was stunning! And the shots were exactly what I wanted. Then, later that day, I met a group of young filmmakers who were meeting with my mentor to pitch their idea for a sci-fi web series. I instantly connected with them as well! It was such great communication flow and overall great vibes. I loved everything about their idea and they said they would love to have me as part of their team! So that was one of the best days of my life, and it just keeps getting better.”
Kate Bishop
“Working on another student’s shoot made me value teamwork more than ever.”
Peyton M.
“After wrap, I felt pride like never before — I made something real.”
Taylor Z.
“I was able to see how the footage looked after it was all done and get a general idea of what would need to be done to turn it into a final product. I feel like even that little bit of exposure to being “on set” and seeing one done in real time stimulated a lot of thoughts about what it would be like for me to go through the creative process of creating a video on the same scale with the same type of equipment. I’m feeling excited and intimidated about the idea at the same time. It’s a scary thought to have to be the one who’s creating a story out of their own mind and trying to convey the same thoughts to others, but also one of the most REWARDING and unforgettable. I’m excited about the idea of having to create my own documentary and to experiment.”
Lori Joshua
“The equipment was great, but the mentorship is what changed me.”
Sasha U.
“So lately I’ve been so busy. Work is literally piling up on my computer and in my head as well. I am stressing out, but hey this isn’t an industry for those who are looking for a relaxing career. There’s plenty more, but I feel the knowledge I’m gaining. I never felt so determined and confident about doing homework. This is what I love to do. And whether it’s reading a script or watching a movie, it’s only building me as a creator and I’m freaking loving the feeling.”
John Margaret
“On my last shoot, I was the leader — and I earned it.”
Casey G.
“The last lesson was extremely interesting from the point of view that it dealt with coping with crew members and cast, their unique personalities, and how to maximize performance and work output. It was a real eye-opener in the sense that it got you to explore your own personality and find a common-ground upon which to work efficiently and minimize conflict. It brought home the reality that as a filmmaker you may have to provide leadership to a large number of people. The assignment highlighted the traits required to pull this off successfully.”
Kathleen Adam
“I found confidence I didn’t know I had when the camera was rolling.”
Sky A.

“I just wanted to use this opportunity to really experiment with all the steps of making a short film. For my first project, “Ghost Killaz” I chose to write, direct, compose, and edit. Through that experience I was really able to find my strengths and weaknesses as well as get a better Idea of what I enjoy doing most while working on a film, as of now I really enjoy writing and directing.”
Gavin Jenna

Riley V.
“Pitching to a panel scared me — until I realized how much it clarified my concept.”
Sasha V.
“Learning the economics of a screenplay made me more intentional with each page.”
Reggie M.
“Choices define characters and have the greatest impact on the progression of a character driven story. But, it’s not just the big choices, like setting off on a quest, or saving the princess, or sacrificing yourself. In fact, the smallest choices, the choices that aren’t so obvious can play just as important a role. These tiny choices are what separate strong characters from weak ones, and great actors from not so great actors. But, above all else, the small choices are the answer to the problems of too many characters and needing more character development.”
Maria Rambeau
“Table reads helped me see where the rhythm fell flat — and how to fix it.”
Maya F
“The focus on rewriting made me fall in love with the process, not just the result.”
Jesse M.
“My mentor asked questions that forced me to clarify my theme — painful but powerful.”
Layla S.
“I started working with my screenplay mentor last week, and after our second meeting I have some real structure (or “scaffolding” as he referred to it) to build my story on. I feel like I have found a wonderful guiding voice that is encouraging me to develop my story without suggesting anything explicit, so the ideas are coming from me- I guess I really needed someone who would help to keep me on task, especially as I have no practice or understanding of what it means to undertake this task of writing a screenplay. I’m finally feeling like my work can become a riveting story without me (I’d been considering scrapping my idea for something more conventional). He also pointed me in the direction of other non-traditional stories that have parallels to my concept. We discussed how to incorporate archetypes and other storylines without unnecessary explanation.”
Isaac Sarah
“My mentor asked for more vulnerability in my script — and it made the story real.”
Jonah G.
“Writing against genre tropes helped me discover my own narrative style.”
Quinn S
“Learning logline structure showed me how to sharpen my pitch and idea.”
Nina T.
“This week I am planning out my trip to California to pitch my screenplay. Airline tickets have been purchased and hotels booked. It is a race against time to finish the text book, editing my short film, and preparing for my pitch. It’s all or nothing!”
Samuel Benjamin
“They are so helpful & topping that with Ron’s teachings, I understand why knowing the base of the story and all the little parts of the story that connect to the bigger ones are so important in the structure of the treatment. You can’t build a house without having blue prints. You can’t wing it; and you can’t create a script without a treatment of the story first.”
Thomas Kyle
“I finally know how to write a logline that actually sells the idea.”
Alex V.
“It’s a very basic framework involving an overall story and order of events. I also decided how I want to begin my story and I will be writing the first 2 scenes this week. I had already written a first scene and now I’m going a different direction. One thing that I really like about my screenwriting mentor, Brian, is how he encourages me to develop ideas without developing them for me or over suggesting things. What I really needed a person who could help me maintain my confidence level in my own ideas and style, and he does that well- offering ideas around practicality and considerations without controlling or impacting my story too much.”
Melissa Ryan
“I had no idea how much formatting mattered — now I respect the reader.”
Jamie K.
“One thing that really excited me recently was my showing a screenplay of mine to a person who has been successful in the script writing business. It was really exciting for me to be able to show a script of mine to some person already involved in Hollywood, and who also has some connections to people in this biz.”
Andrew Eliot
“Writing for actors instead of the page made me focus on motivation and intention.”
Casey J.
“As of now I have typed 44 pages of my screenplay and e-mail them to my mentor. I am finding from my conversations with my mentor and from doing the required reading that the tips have been very valuable. As I type I am altering entire scenes from how I had originally written. I believe the adjustments improve the story greatly.”
Elizabeth Dorothy
“John Raffo and I went over my progress on my screenplay. As of now I have 23 completed draft pages. Not necessarily saying it’s my best work, but it’s great to build off of to improve upon. John and I agreed that he would read over my first act as soon as I complete it, it’s a way for me to start off on a strong as possible note with the first act, as opposed to working on 3 acts then rewriting it all. Not that I have a problem with it that is. He and I also went over some screenplays and movies for me to watch. It was yet another pleasant call with my mentor.”
Wyatt Isabella
“I now write visually, thinking of how a director or editor will interpret the page.”
Reese J.
“This week I was able to work with Joel on creating character descriptions for his current screenplay. I was able to go through the script and pick and choose what and how the characters should be portrayed. Using Story O I was able to upload the info and even use pictures of actors I thought would fill the roles. It was fun seeing the need for character creation in a story, but also how they are developing through the story.”
Nathaniel Brandon
“I was paired up with my screenwriting mentor, who happens to be Ron Peterson, which is totally awesome, because Ron taught screenwriting at the school David Lynch founded. Alex, my advisor, thought this would be a good mentor for me because I am so inspired by the structure of Lynch’s stories and the mood he creates within his films. We had our first phone meeting on Saturday, June 6th, and we discussed sequencing of stories and the language of screenwriting. Also, I watched the documentary The Burden of Dreams, which is about Werner Herzog’s difficult journey of making the film Fitzcorraldo. It was a very eye-opening and inspiring viewing, and later today I will write a paper on what I believe his philosophy of film to be and the archetypes within his films and within another film I am inspired by.”
Kevin Gloria
“Polished more of my script today having shaved off a page of work. I have strong confidence that I’m getting closer and closer to finishing it. Going to start storyboarding soon and speak with my screenwriting mentor John Raffo as soon as possible!”
Evan Michaelson
“My screenwriting mentor and I will be talking again next week from today on Monday to discuss those things he wants me to work on to get a better and more clearer idea of what my screenplay is about. I really enjoyed the extensive and informative conversation that we had.”
Kathleen Earle
“Watching a guest writer deconstruct my scene gave me a masterclass in tension.”
Devon P.
“I learned that writing isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress.”
Riley N.
“Seeing a pro rewrite my scene live was the best lesson I could ask for.”
Chris P.
“My next session will be with my mentor tomorrow to discuss my second assignment and the beginning of writing my first draft for my first act in “Final Draft”. While writing my three act summary, I did some seriously heavy brainstorming and made some mental changes on some of the subject matter of the script. I am happy with what I came up with. I look forward to start writing my first act.”
Dorothy Parker
“We went over building a climax, which was in perfect time seeing as I was up to writing my 2nd act for my feature script! This lesson was extremely helpful since I seem to always lack in the climax area of script writing.”
Andrew Brittany
“I discussed with John Raffo, in regards to my progress slowly down a bit on writing. I explained to him that my discipline has been taking a considerable toll, as I told him that I feel the pressure of time constraints and pressure from others, as if I had deadline to commit to. John told me, and I completely understand and agree, that the worst offender and last thing that a creative artist should worry about, is time. He then suggested that I could schedule another day with my mentor to finish up my screenplay’s first draft, as the absence of the thought of anything to worry about will greatly assist me in my writing discipline and progress. I am grateful of my screenwriting mentor’s encouragement, advice, and thorough logistics and common knowledge towards a writer’s creative process. Or rather, a writer’s journey. I’m going to finish what I started.”
Elizabeth Caleb
“The storyboarding process helped me write more visually.”
Kai D.
“Seeing a real production team respond to my script was surreal and motivating.”
Leo D.
“Today I met with Aimee and she looked over lesson 2 as well as the progression of my story. Right now I’m bouncing off of a lot of ideas. It’s very loose and my characters aren’t very well developed. Aimee gave some great insight on what needs to be developed more and shared with me to look at the book Story by Robert McKee. It is an awesome book! He is thorough on what elements are needed to make a story work. He also outlines that the structure of the story is very important. It gives great examples of excerpts from scripts that don’t work and why. For next week I am to work on some sample coverages. This is to help me breakdown a script and become comfortable enough with them to know why it does or doesn’t work. I will be reading The Shining and a script from a project that Aimee is working on right now and then breaking them down. I am also working on developing my character’s backgrounds in more detail and the structure of the story.”
Nathan Adams
“I am in the part of the Writers Journey where it talks about Star Wars and it’s amazing. Not that I didn’t already love the series, but all the little sub text that is going on is crazy. As I wrap up the book I am getting excited to start my own screenplay!”
Lori Thomas
“I’ve had an incredible externship at the studio where I’ve done a bit of everything. It’s been intense but insanely cool. I’m getting really close on my script and am very pleased with how it’s turning out. My writing mentor has been extremely helpful in getting me to where I need to be, and I am confident in my abilities. I will try to post more updates as we go along here, and can’t wait to get to LA!”
Christopher Diana
“Every week’s deadline kept me disciplined — I actually finished my first full script.”
Avery L.

Taylor H.
“Hearing another student’s take on my concept opened up new story directions.”
Xavier R.
“Tackling act three rewrites helped me finish what I start — that was a huge shift.”
Brooke C.
“My screenwriting mentor and I went over the third Act Structure of my story, and we talked about how my story should be more grounded and have a believability factor that makes my story engaging, along with a major morality moment in my story. I am now writing my screenplay and written a few pages. Proud of my progress!”
Tyler Julia
“I also got feedback from my screenwriting mentor about my screenplay. He had some good things to say about. He considers it to look professional and lean. But he thinks I could have made some things clearer in my writing. I knew that I would have some work to do with my screenplay but it is good to have a professional help me develop my ideas and make it as good as possible. There are a lot of people who know more about screenwriting than me and I can learn something new every time I get feedback.”
Samuel Laura
“Today I met with my script writing mentor in addition to Eli from the film connection whom I’ve been working with. My screenwriting mentor was not only passionate and knowledgeable about movies but a wealth of knowledge (in general). I learned a lot just from a phone session with him. The business of screenwriting is not for the faint of heart believe me. I’m here and I’ve made the pledge to continue on.”
Raven Roth
“Writing a scene for an actor helped me see things from their perspective.”
Mia K.
“Workshopping dialogue taught me how to cut the fluff and keep it human.”
Cameron F.
“I had my session with my screenwriting mentor the other day. This time my treatment looked much better. I’ve learned I need to have someone else read my stuff before I turn it in, to get an outsiders perspective. I still need to make a few changes, but all in all this went over much better. I’m learning a lot about being more detailed in my storyline. One thing that has made me feel good in all this is Ron telling me that I have a natural ability in something that is not easily learned. Phew! That’s really good to hear!”
Kevin Dorothy
“I have to keep the audience of the edge of their seat and make the characters go through so much problems that it almost seems impossible for them to escape. That’s how my movie or any other movie will gain attention. What is the character risking to achieve his goals? How can I build momentum or tension to the point where the audience feels like they’re there with my characters and make the audience feel what the characters’ feel? After reviewing the importance of a second act with Jason, we took off to film Dennis’s short silent film. We went through a lot of errors since it was his first time directing with us but we tried helping in any way we could. I saw that he felt the pressure of time and starting getting a little nervous. He reminded me of my first time because everything he went through and did I did myself. He was thinking more of shots for the editing instead of playing out the scene just like me. After watching Dennis perform, I had a better idea of what and what not to do on set. Can’t wait to see Dennis and Tal become one of the best!”
Tammy Helen
“I’m on my last pieces of editing the script and jotting down notes on where I want to extend which Eric has incredibly helpful, in fact, he even read through both of my short screenplays and gave a few pointers.”
Kevin Cynthia
“I told my mentor how I got stuck with my script. He said the same exact thing Peter told me. Of course he wasn’t upset that I couldn’t write, instead, he motivated me. He told me not to give up because this is just the beginning. I’m not used to it yet. Lack of focus, stress, and anxiety are just the beginning hurtles I have to overcome. THIS MAKES ME WANT TO BELIEVE IN MYSELF!”
Thomas Owen
“John Raffo has read and likes my screenplay, even saying that he was surprised and didn’t know what to expect out of my script. But he really likes the elements of the story and how colorful my dialogue is. Just need to iron out some story elements and shorten it a tad so it can be its best. I’m very happy and satisfied with the critique.”
Cassie Lang
“The assignments helped me experiment — comedy, drama, thriller — I found my niche.”
Cameron T.
“I found the courage to write my own story, not just what I thought people wanted to read.”
Eli B.
“My screenwriting mentor totally saved the day. He gave me one idea that totally captured my imagination. I’ve been working on the idea and plotting it out before I put it in my script. I have pretty much written the idea all down on my legal pad. I want to have it charted out first before I actually start “writing” it. I’m really grateful for my mentor! He really came through for me.”
Debra Maya
“I have to remind myself that I am worthy of my dreams. See, I know I am a man on a mission and that I am capable of making things happen with or without help from others. Now that I have a nice camera I plan to write and produce something new based on the books and lessons I’ve been exposed to through my course thus far. I know and have been told I have a gift of telling stories so why not believe in myself and start doing what I want to do and love”
Melissa Thomas
“I found how the assistant director breaks down the script into the production board to be very informative. I think this is very important because, as an aspiring writer, it lets you know that literally every word of your script is going to be analyzed.”
Amanda Brandon
“Had my first session with Jason yesterday and I have to say that I’m already excited to go to the next one. We built a cinema rig for an upcoming shoot and just UHG cameras, I love them. I’ve been told next time I get to try my hand at building it myself, so that’ll be interesting. Also got three screenplay ideas cranked out and chose one of them to go further with today. I’m now ready to have a movie watching marathon since I was collecting titles from chapter one to watch later; I will also have some adding to my list as research for the screenplay I’ll be writing. Time to make some popcorn and get to watching!”
Isaac Jennifer
“The character workshop changed the way I build emotional arcs.”
Skyler H.
“Every week I am getting closer and closer to completing the next chapter of the curriculum. I am also writing new pages for my first feature. I can’t believe it! I am writing my own screenplay! This school has been such a blessing and I have had many doors open. Things are slowly starting to fall into place and I cannot wait to start getting more in depth with the school as well as my career choice. My mentor wants me to work more with him on a documentary he is working on and he helped me get an internship a few months ago. In the past few chapters of the online course work, there have been some of The Hollywood Reporter’s Roundtable videos. I highly recommend watching the others on YouTube or their website. It is great hearing what other professional have to say as well as getting another perspective on what it takes to make things happen in this industry.”
Luke Kevin
“This (tutoring session) was extremely helpful! Yes, thank you. This will definitely help me get my screenplay underway.”
Andrew Johnson
“What a week! I finished my horror film teaser finally and uploaded it for the world to see. The teaser, in my humble opinion, is pretty bad ass. I think I’ve watched it like fifty times now. The only problem is that my teaser puts my script to shame and now I have to think of ways to make my script match the teaser!”
William Eliot
“My voice as a writer became clearer with every session.”
Jordan R.
“About a month ago, I finished the first draft of my screenplay, and am now about half way finished with my second draft. There were a lot of lessons learned in the past month, including: make sure actions sequences are relevant to the characters’ growth, be willing to take a break from your work and come back to it later, read many screenplays, and assume the role as the student (learn something new and question your work) whenever you reach a landmark.”
Anya Corazon
“The industry insight I gained makes me feel like I can actually get hired.”
Peyton F.

Anthony DeFrancisco
“My writing confidence skyrocketed once I got real feedback and rewrote from it.”
Casey Y.
“I greatly enjoy the journey I’m on and the knowledge I’m acquiring on the way to becoming a professional screenwriter. I trust in my mentor and his guidance which have led me to redoing many parts of my script and they turned out much, much better.”
Emery Wright.
“I finally understood structure when I could see it break down on screen.”
Jamie L.
“This week I was able to meet Eric and Hallie twice and I was able to start learning new editing software. I was able to get some information on the masters in screenwriting offered through the Film Connection. I am excited by this possibility and I am considering this as a next step. My meetings with Ron are going great. I have moved on to the next stage of the writing process!”
Michael Sarah
“In today’s lesson my mentor and I discussed more about the proper format structure when writing script for film and television. We discussed more about what makes the audience have interest for both the protagonist and antagonist in films. In this lesson I also showed my mentor my finished script for a movie idea that I had in mind when doing my first low budget film. After reading the script my mentor was very impressed on how I was able to write a script in perfect movie format with a story that was able to captivate his attention. He loved the script and gave me some excellent criticism which made me feel like I was actually writing movies for the big screen. All in all today was a great day and I enjoyed every bit of it.”
Jonathan Raeford
“The peer review process gave me thicker skin and clearer vision.”
Morgan D.

Morgan L.
“Script coverage practice made me sharper about spotting weak scenes in my own work.”
Marco T.
“My first script rewrite showed me how rewriting is really just re-seeing the story.”
Amanda P.

Noah B.
“Working through the second act was tough, but my mentor really helped me unlock the emotional arc of the story.”
Kayla M.

Drew H.
“I am more motivated than ever before because I can already see an enormous improvement in my writing skills, understanding of film and screenplays, and my understanding of the movie business because my mentor and I have a boxer / trainer relationship. Now that might not work with others but for me as the extern I couldn’t be happier.”
Avery Parker
Great program. Material and modules really hit the nail on the head. Could use more force with screenwriting mentors to commit to their students. Otherwise, great mentors that have a lot to offer. This program shows that you have to really control how bad you want it to happen.
Benjamin T. Watkins – Greensboro, NC
I was a professor of filmmaking for a total of six years at top schools like Parsons New School in New York, New York Institute of Technology, and the San Francisco Academy of Art, she says. “I loved teaching there. But one of the best things about the Film Connection is the 1 to 1 ratio, student to teacher.”
Bayou Bennett – Los Angeles, CA
The advisors and mentors keep in good contact with their students. They make sure that the students are understanding their assignments and absorbing as much information as possible.
Benny Perkinson – Richmond, VA
Everything was alright for the most part. There was miscommunication in terms of going to this school for specifically editing and among other things. In my 6 months at this school, I didn’t gain anymore knowledge of editing as when I started. Overall if you don’t know what you want to do in the film making industry, you definitely experience a variety of things.
Mason Nelson – Henderson, NV
I had the privilege of working under Richard Brandes. He was a great teacher and communicator and it was always a pleasure working and collaborating with him!
Matt Boyd – Clarendon, TX
I think the program is great. I’ve learned a lot from my mentor, Steve Carmichael
Alicia Riggins – Macon, GA
My skill level at the start of this program in August was a beginner, a novice at best. I was brand new to a film set. Now, I’m directing my own videos and making promising relationships with clients as a filmmaker.
Aaron Weitlauf – Nashville, TN
My experience with RRFC has been astonishing. When I started with this program, COVID-19 had everyone on lock down. That didn't stop the school from teaching their students. I participated in zoom meetings with my amazing mentor, Steve Carmichael. When we finally were allowed to meet in person, we started the hands on portion. I learned lighting, camera angles, how to put a lens on a camera, how to set up a camera, terms used on set to communicate with other departments, and so much more. I recently was a First AC on a short film and got to work with other students and professionals in this industry. I had a chance to experience what a real shoot was like. By pure luck, when meeting Steve at Rite Media for a lesson, I got to tour a set and see professionals in action. I also had the privilege of meeting new people and even one of Steve's past students. I am currently finishing up the editing portion of the program and Pavel Rusakov is one of the smartest individual's I've ever met. Any questions I have, both Steve and Pavel were willing and able to answer. With confidence, I feel ready to start my career in the film industry.
Leeanna Marie Strickland – Winder, GA
Training with an actual professional took my experience to the next level. Especially since working with Sean, who is very knowledgeable, and actively working in the industry. Hands on training is exactly what I needed in order to get the training and support I was looking for.
The length of the program was perfect and it was exactly what I was looking for. A six month commitment is perfect. With my busy schedule, I could not see myself going to a four year college, or even part-time student at a community college. This was the perfect amount of time.
Learning industry and in the eBook, is the best form of education. Being able to read chapters and take quizzes from home was helpful and allowed me to fully understand the material. My internship served me as a tool to get answers to all my questions, and put into practice what I had learned from the eBook. This was the perfect way for me to learn, and it completely exceeded my expectations.
Leopoldo Rivera – Healdsburg, CA
Film Connection is actually what it says it is, if you want to be in the industry and want those connections you have the opportunities if you put in the time and work. I've enjoyed all I've learned and I will continue to learn as time goes on. Im blessed to be able to finish the program with a crazy family schedule at home but I'm grateful for Film Connection.
Lewis Williams – Winter Garden, FL
My experience with the cinematography program like anything had its ups and downs. It was tough in the beginning, it was a lot of new things to get used to, being that I had just moved across country and was starting school after being out of school for 20 years. There was no way I was going to give up on myself and it helped knowing that other people weren’t giving up on me either. In the past several weeks the studio has gotten more projects and it has given me a chance to learn more, a chance to prove myself, and a chance to take on more responsibilities from my mentor. The e-book was very informative, the hands-on was exactly the way I learn best, but another useful tool was watching tutorials. This has been an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to continue to learn and grow in the field, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for my cinematography career. Thank you so much Elliot for all your help through this whole process. You were so nice and patient with me, and you helped with any issue that arose.
Lisa Maguire – Hockley, TX
Film connection established my connection to the best mentor I've had so far in my creative career. They gave me a path to pursue my higher goals in education and creativity.
Lucas Martin – Santa Rosa, CA
I very much enjoyed my experience with Film Connection. The courses were simple, yet very informative. My on-set experience with my mentor was also very educational. All of the RRFC representatives were very helpful
Luke Newkirk – Portland, OR
My experience here was great ! I learned how to think outside the box not only as a filmmaker but as a director We worked on things such as commercials ,vocal recordings , and videos for events. I learn more and more everyday I go I highly recommend this school
Lussane Sackor – Levittown, PA
I’m forever thankful to Film Connection. I had the opportunity to learn from two real Hollywood professionals, first-hand. I loved that. Training with an actual pro, allowed me to make connections within the industry and learn different film techniques. During my time here, I was able to work on a professional short film, able to observe the behind-the-scenes of another short film, and able to become one of the PAs for an upcoming web series. I have been on set, participated in production meetings, and went on a location scouting. I, now, possess a better understanding of what to do and how to do it. I obtained a foot in the door of this industry all because of my mentors and my school! It was completely worth it. Please attend!
Lynnette Visger – Woodstock, GA
My hands on training was nothing like I expected it to be. My mentor was very helpful during my learning process, letting me join in one projects and going through each course with me to give a deeper insights on the film industry. The length of the program was the perfect amount of time to let me get started into the career of my choice.
Madison Yuknavage – St. Johns, FL
It is a nice institution to start to develop yourself in the film industry.
Magalie De La Torre – Los Angeles, CA
I learned how the industry works and about what people want to watch, what pulls and draws the audience in, what will compel that person to come back from a commercial break, and how to keep that person tuned-in so they want to watch your series, season after season.
Major Cheryl G. Agbunag – Clearwater, FL
I was able to meet with my mentor and other students in the program. I was introduced to other filmmakers and cinematographers who showed me the ropes of film production. I was able to learn shoots, lighting, directing, producing and screenplay. I enjoy the hours I have put into achieving these goals and I hope to continue to achieve more in the film industry.
Manuel R. Amadeo – The Bronx, NY
I really recommend the program and it's structure. Took the classes during the pandemic and they were proffesional and safe the whole time. A really great experience and a huge step in my film director's journey.
Marco Santiago -Flowery Branch, GA
Working with a hands on mentor has changed everything in my writing career. I came into the program not knowing the first step in writing a script. I didn't know the unwritten rules either. But now almost six months later i feel i have be mentored and put on a track to not only begin my writing career but make it a productive on to. I think Mr. Richard Brandes for his time and effort for taking a chance on me. I also think Elliot Campos for helping me and keeping me updated on everything. I just needed a chance and feel with RRFC i received it. I would recommend this program to anyone who wants a chance to break into the field. But it will not come easy. Hard work is required.
Marcus Morgan – Baltimore, MD
The approach of studying with Film connection was an amazing experience. The flexibility of the program, the e-book, and ultimately the opportunity to learn from an industry professional matched according to my goals, exceeded all of my expectations. The cherry on top is that this program is very affordable. I am walking out with set experience and valuable knowledge to succeed in this industry. I'm very thankful for this program and excited about the great things to come.
Mariannjely Marval – Dallas, GA
I enjoyed my time with film connection I learn a lot about the things that go on in a production the history of film how to act and treat cast and crew and my mentors always answered when I need help or any questions thank you!
Marica S. Jones – Upper Marlboro, MD
Before I had any training, I tried to write a screenplay…Just being in this program goes to show the night and day difference between trying to do it on your own without any help or assistance or structured knowledge, and then taking the program.
Marisa Merkl – Milwaukee, WI
My writing has almost come to be like second nature…I’ve gotten to the point where I go like, “Give me a laptop, give me an idea, and I’ll give something to you in like 20 minutes.”
Mark Salcido – Los Angeles, CA
‘-working with Zef I felt was the best opportunity I could get, he told me everything I needed to know plus he gives me the confidence I needed to follow through with this path
-what really made me feel great about the program was going to my first set, it really made me excited to keep going, everyone was very professional and accepting and I knew I would like this community
-the length of the program really worked for me, I am able to start my career earlier than the people i graduated with and I knew I’ve been ready to start this career for a long time
-the tuition was one of the best parts, I do have some trouble as an independent 18 year old paying back my loan but if I had known about this program longer I could have saved up for the tuition easily.
-I loved the online experience, especially with the COVID. Scare it was better for my personal situation and only having to meet with my mentor I felt comfortable in every situation. Learning remote also helped with the pressure, in school I always felt watched by the teacher and more intelligent kids when I was the last to finish a test or the last to get my things together for h th e next class. I loved setting my own schedule and feeling independent.
Marlene St. George – Otisville, NY
My experience with my mentors have been awesome. I’ve a lot from them and enjoyed there time and effort.
Marshawn Davis – Sandy Springs, GA
I really was attracted to the fact that you can work around your schedule and still be able to pursue your dreams that way. Because when you’re working, it is really difficult to uproot your life and stop everything and go to school full-time and then abide by a set schedule, because usually that’s how most traditional schools go. Also, I was attracted to the fact that you get to network and get to know professionals who are actually in the field doing something… And you really do learn a lot being on set, and being sort of thrust into it, the reality of it, rather than being in a classroom reading books.
Mary Anne Zamora – Charlotte, NC
I had a really fun time being a part of their program. Being on set, collaborating with others, learning new things, and also meeting new people, all of it is what made my experience enjoyable and entertaining. I have gained confidence in my future for the film industry ever since I first started the program and it has me excited for the years to come!
Matthew Franco – Spring, TX
I love that they put you with a mentor to teach you about film. I believe the way every mentor mentors is different, but me personally, my mentor had me watch 3 movies a week and write three reviews. I usually wrote 10 pages of my script a week and read a few scripts. I think the experience was valuable I really enjoyed my mentor he was kind and always willing to go out of his way to help me with what I was struggling. The only few criticisms I have are that 1 I think people need longer to write their scripts, the type of person I am is I need to take time to make things good. I think a lot of people would agree, otherwise you have a half done screenplay that you have to pitch to a studio. 2 I wish I was in person in a studio but because of where I was located (and Covid) I wasn’t able to unfortunately. Overall a great experience that I will remember and hopefully benefit and get a career out of.
Megan Bond – Lubbock, TX
My experience with film connection was great, the opportunity to work hands on with a professional at my craft was amazing. I think it's better to be hands on because you learn more techniques. The program was flexible so it did not interfere with my work schedule, All around it was a great experience.
Mia Jordan – Upper Marlboro, MD
This program has been the greatest education I’ve ever had. It was great pleasure working with them, including my advisor Elliot Campos. Whatever I needed, Elliot always had the solution. If you’re looking for an affordable school with a clear schedule for work, Film Radio Film connection is the one.
Michael Glaze – Birmingham, AL
It was an amazing experience for me and to live my dream to work in the industry of filming, my mentors helped me out every step of the way any questions I had, I was given the answer no matter how difficult the question was. I’m proud to have graduated and am looking forward to this new journey in life!
Michael Morales – Queens, NY
The RRFC program is a great program for students or graduates looking to have an in-depth internship experience in their field of interest. The school connects you with a variety of professionals that are here to inspire and coach you through your talents so that when you make your first steps into the industry of field, you will be better prepared.
My favorite part of my program, video editing and screenwriting, was the time I had with my screenwriting mentor. They understood the craft very well and helped me to open my mind to the various routes in a story that I would have never thought of myself. My production mentor was very down to earth and knowledgeable about the equipment used for everyday to professional film making. The overall program works around your schedule, allows for creative freedom and discovery in your projects, and if you take hold of the opportunity by the horns you can accomplish much.
Michele Gibson – Pearland, TX
Usually I learned most of the filming aspect by myself for my YouTube channel, but I've decided to gain more knowledge to hone my craft. Attending this school is worth it for me, because not only I had a fun time learning about the film industry, but to get an intern at a studio nearby to gain experience of what's it like in the business. Now I wanted to take it to the next level by learning more and meeting other people, so i can create more content to inspire others to do what they want. Best believe Doppoganga is going to represent.
Minh Nguyen – Boston, MA
Being a student with film connect has given me the best start to my career I could ever have imagine. Working one on one with my Mentor Daniel and Bayou gave me a real personal insight as to how to things actually work in thr film world and the best way to approach situations. Film connect is one of the best decision I ever made.
Nana Baffour – Los Angeles, CA
I felt like this was a good experience to learn different areas of the film industry and how it works. I got some good hands on experience with the program. It was nice because I have a couple videos I made with a professional production company. While I feel this was a good experience I still think I have a lot more I can learn and improve my knowledge.
Nathan Kane – Washington D.C.
I had a great experience in the program. I was able to get on set to start my hands on experience, and I really got a prospective of what this career choice will be like in the future.
Nathan Venegas – Keller, TX

Nicholas Alexander Valdes – Miami, FL
There are not enough words to describe the skills and experience that I obtained during my education at RRFC. Having a previous education in Audio Engineering at Filmians Institute and then The Film Connection, after a few years in that industry I realized I wanted to be in control of what I created and not so much only editing other people's work. I had been doing my own film stuff since Covid started and I recalled my positive experiences with The Film Connection, so I looked for a film program and what do you know… I found the Film Connection. I knew if it was anything like the hands-on in-studio experience I had with the Audio Engineering program I did through RRFC then I would have a great education in this field. I was able to pick a local studio where they set me up with my mentorship. Having this mentorship was crucial in the application of the ebook lessons and beyond, creating networking opportunities and relationships that continued after I completed the program. Also having access to my own academic advisor who gave me the best support pertaining to the program and beyond. My advisor Elliot, was highly supportive and invested in my experience through the program; always checking my understanding of key concepts and techniques. He always reached out to me, and never failed to be there for me when I needed clarity. He made sure to always reach out to me at least weekly to see how I was doing. The experiences and relationships that I have with my mentor Ken and advisor Elliot have been great and I hope will continue. RRFC provides career making relationship building opportunities I haven't seen anywhere else. I learned so much more with RRFC than I ever thought I would through a school program. Upon graduating I now have the confidence to move forward in my career as a filmmaker.
Nikolai Bloom – Scottsdale, Az
Review of RRFC! Here we go!
Being a part of the Film Connection has been, to date, the best film school experience I’ve had. Transitioning from high school to college was a challenging experience for me, as I knew I wanted to pursue a career in the film industry, but I didn’t want to waste four or more years in a college classroom learning things I’d never use in life.
The Film Connection exceeded my expectations, because it got me working with someone in my area, and allowed me to build lasting relationships with people I can count on in the future.
So far I’ve been on six different shoots while in the FC program, from conferences to weddings. My mentors have taught me to always stay humble, be prepared beforehand, and have a clear sense of what I want to achieve.
One of the experiences I got the most out of was screenwriting, since I was paired with a coach who believed in my writing and kept pushing me further.
I recommend RRFC because of the low cost, great connections, and skills you learn.
Check it out for yourself!

Noah Anderson – Monument, CO
My experience was a great one! Working with my mentor, Richard, was one of the best things I've done and he has been an amazing mentor. I've learned a lot because of him.
Noah Bessey – Portland, ME
I really enjoyed my time with film connection. The mentors I worked with were great and helped me out so much. They taught me everything I now know about cameras and lighting and storytelling and the list goes on. I am very thankful to have been on this journey and I am excited to see where it goes from here.
Noah Gaskie – Saginaw, TX
Before starting this program I was unsure of how to get the ball rolling career wise in what I wanted to do. I didn't even know if there was work or like minded people in my city. RRFC found and linked me with professionals in my area. Since, I've learned so much from the program itself and about my area by traveling around the city.
Noah Maddox – Fairhope, AL
I really enjoyed my program with the film connection. Through trying to gather different ways to remain educated while at a price that’s affordable, film connection definitely was the perfect way. The film connection connected me with some very knowledgeable people that I know will help catapult my experience and learning course even after graduation.
Nola Payton – Dumfries, VA
I?m glad this is the route I took, or I?d know very little of the film world truly. Having it occur in front of my eyes, being seen by the ones with opportunities gives me hope that I can make it somewhere in the industry. It?s about being in the midst of the reality of film, not the idea. In a classroom you?re with amateurs, you?re learning from mistake. Having a mentor who knows what it takes to arrive at success paves a less rocky path for me. My mentor?s offered insight not only directly, but through the people I?ve gotten to cross paths with through her and the sets she?s taken me on, some also having offered me advice and opportunities. So far it?s been an incredible time with this program, and I feel secure in what?s to come.
Odette MacDonald – McAllen, TX
My education – you can’t put a price on it. You cannot put a price on what I learned from Kevin. I’m sure they don’t teach that in film school, the things he taught.
Ofu Obekpa – Atlanta, GA
It was a great program. Really helpful. The mentor gave me everything I need to be successful and my student advisor helped a lot with my work and being able to pitch my film.
Olivia Garland – Homer City, PA
Amazing program!!! its great to have someone that works in the film industry and gives you guidance and assistance.my mentor Aaron N. Feldman was great at ansewring all my questions and helping me understand more about the industry .The mentors are amazing by educationing students and they want to help you with reaching towards you goals. I would Definitly recomend this program to others!!!!!
Olivia Gatsch – Wayne, IL
This program was extremely helpful for me. The curriculum teaches you everything you need to know in order to get started in the industry, and being paired up with a mentor gives you plenty of opportunities to get the kind of practical experience that you simply can't get in a classroom. I'm already being offered professional work after six months in the program. I'd highly recommend RRFC to anyone who's a "learn by doing" type, and feels more comfortable working on actual projects than sitting through lectures and turning in papers.
Paul Grumbly – Longmont, CO
This program did an excellent job demystifying the filmmaking process for me. They broke everything down into simple manageable steps so that now I feel confident in my ability to run my own production and start getting my scripts made.
Pearl Windle – Thousand Oaks, CA
if you go out there and you push yourself and you drive to get better in everything you do, you can make it. Anybody can make it, but you have to really want to, and you have to really try.
Peter Scheibner – Raleigh, NC
My experience was great and the recount has been memorable. Communication and coping skills had a huge impact on my journey through out the course of my chosen career with my mentor. I am grateful, at least, to have learnt the needed experience and work ethics within the frame of time with him.
Philip Umukoro – Colorado Springs, CO
First and foremost, not only is the film connection a hands on program that pairs you with an actually filmmaker, it's also affordable. My experience over the past few months with my mentors Herschel and Ron have been nothing short of exciting. I've learned alot of things about writing and directing that I didn't before, I've formed new habits and skills that made me a more efficient filmmaker, and I've also made alot of new friends in the industry thanks to this program. I can't wait to see what the future, near and far, holds for me. Thanks film connection.
Quinton E. Handley – Louisville, KY
I had a really good experience with both screen writing and filming mentor. During covid, it was a little harder but they were able to work with my schedule and help me out a lot with knowing more about the industry. I appreciate the time they took to to help me develop my skills.

Raheem McCullum – Ann Arbor, MI
My experience at Film Connection has been amazing! I've gained so much knowledge and gained a great amount of relationships with other creatives. My mentors are Phenomenal! I spent a lot of time with them going over each chapter in detail and comparing them to real-life situations. I even got the opportunity to work with them on a few projects! I'm grateful that I was able to learn from Daniel and Bayou! They're great humans and very insightful teachers. I'm excited to continue this journey as a Film Director! Thank you Film Connection!
Ramone Wilkinson – Glendale, CA
I wake up every morning realizing that I have made the right decision.
Reem Rawi – Nashville, TN
I had a wonderful experience in the program and I would say if your considering checking it out for yourself just remember what you get out of it will depend on your own drive and enthusiasm to learn which is the core reason why my own experience my so rich.
Richard King – Miami, FL
It was so great experience with RRFC , the mentor Richard Brandes is an amazing guy and he is always been good positive support for me to come up with great vision of screenwriting. Even though I was torturing him a lot with stupid questions but still he tolerated me ask more and more questions. If you want to be a screenwriter writer and if you are getting Richard as your mentor it will be a great success for you. The assistance from the school was great too, they always keep on calling to know how I am doing and how the classes are going on and always try to help me to find out ways to explore more. It is an affordable Tution fee for a middle class family and easy to pay off as well.
Rinoj Varghese – Silver Spring, MD
People will call and say, “Hey you know, such and such? They said you did a great job. Can we meet?”
Rob Chiola – Orlando, FL
My experience with all of my mentors and my advisor has been amazing they have answered all of the questions i have had and helped me figure out different things when i was stuck
My writing mentor Scott helped me with my writing and showed me how to look at it in different ways and helped me push forward when I was stuck on what to do with different parts of the story
My other mentor Jared has helped me understand the more physical side of the film industry and he has shown me how they film different shots and how the different sets are made and he has answered almost all of the questions that a gave him and I am very appreciative of both of them
Robert Bradbury – Dracut, MA
This program has helped me get a better idea of the creator I want to be. Working with a mentor on and off set was a great experience for me as a young filmmaker to understand how it can be in the filmmaking world. Working with my mentor and other students has encouraged me to continue working as a filmmaker/creator and to create my own work.
Robert Ponce – El Monte, CA
The value for the students is being able to see the behind the scenes, pulling back the curtain…I think that kind of experience just provides such a priceless value to a person that’s entering the film business thatメs deciding where they want to go, what department, what place, what appeals to them.
Ron McPherson – Los Angeles, CA
I'm coming close to finishing the program and it's been really helpful. I have learned a lot, met new people and students, and have been granted access to plenty of resources for filming. It's a great gateway to the industry.

Working with RRFC was a tremendous help in getting me into the film Industry. It has been able to get me a couple of steps further into the field, by not only working with actual professionals but giving me an overall understanding.
Sean Rodgers – Brownmills, NJ
You can have as many pieces of paper as you want in your hand that say that you did this and that and helped out halfway with a project, but until you put some muscle into the game, and build your own confidence level and actually do it, none of that matters.
Sean Taylor – Philadelphia, PA
I love the experience. The online classes ate easy, and meeting up with my mentor once or twice a week is SO worth it!! I?m having a lot of fun and I?m so glad I?m doing this and not some boring class somewhere else.
Selma Harris – Preston, ID
It was such an amazing experience being part of Film Connection. It has prepared me a lot for my future career as well as my future in the film industry.
Selma Vukovic – St. Louis, MO
Working with Film Connections was a great way to get into the Film Industry. They pair you with someone already in the business and you get that hands on experience that you don’t get in other schools. It is a short program in comparison to other schools which means you get to work right away but you still learn a lot in that time. Overall I am happy with my experience.
Seth Hathaway – Saint John, KS
You guys have an amazing curriculum, it really… even myself as mentor, when I was able to go through the entire curriculum, it gives you a true appreciation for the industry it makes you become a professional in the business and to know what to look out for, and know how to prepare yourself.
Sharon Tomlinson – Atlanta, GA
I am so glad and immensely grateful that I took the initiative to research alternatives to film school (and found Film Connection) – since I realized an interest and an insatiable curiosity about Film later in life than the typical college going age (22).
Being back in Atlanta after 5 years of working in the tech industry in California, I felt like a complete fish out of water. I had no idea where to begin. Who to talk to. How to do this. All I know is that I was unshakably curious about Filmmaking and this world – but had no idea how to transform my curiosity into any actionable steps.
Meeting Steve and interviewing with him was the first time I felt inspired in ages, he made me want to do this despite all the systemic and cultural odds stacked against me (there?s not many South Asian and Middle Eastern women to look up to in Hollywood in front of the camera and behind it). ??Steve Carmichael is truly one of the most wonderful souls I have met – he has lived through so much of history – and is so empathetic and well-versed not only in the world of Filmmaking but the WORLD at large. I truly believe empathy and having eclectic experiences – having a breadth of experience – leads to success in this industry. He makes me want to see the world and experience it, so that I can write about it, create about it, and be inspired. It truly all ties back. He is a force of nature – and we immediately connected. I could not have a better first mentor and friend in this industry, truly.
He inspires me, educates me, encourages me, and has given me actual actionable steps I can take towards achieving my dreams.
Through Steve, I met some people who have also become friends and mentors. I?m interning and becoming very integrated at RiTE Media Group, an Atlanta premier production studio. That alone has made Film Connection worth it for me. Through this internship, I?m able to see actual avenues of where I can take my interest in this and make it a career. I have people in my corner – as a result of my hard work and who I am. It makes me hopeful for the future.
I will say though that getting the most out of Film Connection is not for the faint of heart. Although I met people in and around Steve or through this program, I had to fight through my shyness and any bout of social anxiety, and literally FORCE myself to introduce myself to people, talk to people, and ask for opportunity even when I didn?t want to or was feeling too shy. You have to be proactive! That is the reality and the advice I?d give. I?m not trying to dissuade or say this industry is not for introverts – I?m not saying that at all as I am an introvert myself – but you?ve got to put yourself out there BEYOND this program to see more traction. Force yourself even when you don?t feel like it.
Additionally, Elliot Campos as an Academic Advisor went above and beyond and is excellent at what he does. He is always a pleasure to speak to, and did a wonderful job at keeping me accountable. I am looking forward to continuing to foster my connection and friendship with him as he has great experience in Screenwriting and many, many other aspects of Film. He has helped guide me and still continues to in moments of uncertainty or when I was confused about the program or where I want to take my interest in this world. I?m looking forward to see where his career continues to take him – he is a force to be reckoned with!
I hope that in the near future I can be one of the people you guys blog about who have done some crazy cool stuff in the film world. I plan on working my butt off – so let?s see what happens. I?m looking forward to the future 🙂
This is just the beginning. Cheers.
Shaunya Bhayani – Lawrenceville, GA
WOW TIME FLEW BY! And that’s exactly why I wanted to do this program. The entertainment is always moving forward and changing and I didn’t want to have to go to school for 4 plus years just to get out and start at the bottom somewhere.. So I’m SO GLAD I found this program instead! 6 months flew by and it was seriously the best decision I could’ve made for myself and my goals for the future. The greatest part of this program was the fact that I got assign to a SUPER awesome mentor who was/is able to help me grow in my craft and actually get me onto sets right from the get go! Like seriously, the first legit film set I was ever on and it was a feature length horror film, COULD NOT HAVE BEEN ANYTHING MORE PERFECT! I’m also so grateful to my academic advisor because I was never left in the dark and he was always there to help me and answer any questions I had and also just super nice to have a friendly chat with! I am so appreciative of both of them helping me in taking the first steps in what I want to be my life long career path. Thank you!
Shayla Conley – Austin, TX
I would recommend them they are amazing and so very helpful. Especially Mr. Elliot thank you for being such an amazing person to me. You always made sure I was good. It was a smooth and easy process I’ll definitely be returning to further my education. Thank you Film Connection for believing in me.

The past few months at Film Radio Film Connection have been career making. I am happy to say I have achieved unbelievable milestones. The exemplary work of the mentors alone speaks volumes to the productivity of the university and its staff. I feel ready for hands on work as I had the opportunity to further craft my skills at editing.
Solmaz Aghayeva – Fredericksburg, VA

I’ve done so many cool things in the studio I’ve been working with. I’ve had a great experience with Film Connection, opportunities it gave me.
Steven Deleonardis – San Diego, CA
Just looking it over, it was different…There was no [other] program where you get to work with a production company. And that was huge for me because I wanted studio, or on set experience, or at least learning under someone who’s currently in the industry.
Steven Hadrych III – Los Angeles, CA
Although the pandemic slowed down/ halted studio work, my mentor Niko, did and is still doing a good job helping me understand the technicalities of working on film and cameras.
Steven Thompson – Virginia Beach, VA
These mentors are the best…Never in my life would I be placed with these people otherwiseナPeople do all kinds of things to get to these people… I’m heavily impressed that Iメve been afforded these major privileges through the [Film Connection] curriculum.
Susan Berger – Washington D.C.
All was great great experience from Elliot and Daniel lir I learn a lot from them now I’m on stage to go .
Talaat Talaat Mohamed Hamed Sharab – Inglewood, CA
This has been the most amazing experience. I wasn't cut out for a university and this apprenticeship programs works the way a trade school would. Its all hands on and its all related to the field and my personal interests and skill development. The communication between my mentor and my advisors in LA could not have been more consistent and helpful. I am super appreciative of all the opportunities I was able to get working with this program!
Taylor Smith – Austin, TX
My experience with RRFC has been a spectacular experience. Even though the pandemic has put a hold on a lot of things, my Mentor and Academic Facilitator made sure I stayed on top of answering questions I had.
Working with a Mentor 1 on 1 is a great advantage, because I got to experience some behind the scenes moments. And my mentor Patrick Wimp is awesome. No matter how crazy my questions were, he showed respect and answered all of them with tips.
Great job to RRFC and to me!
Tierra Meeks – Maryville, IN
I think it’s a great place to have a good start in your career, you learn the basics which help you progress a lot in your life if done right. I would recommend it for a beginner case
Totto Shelley – San Diego, CA
Film Connection has been a great experience for me with incredible staff and teachers/mentors. Everyone is very knowledgeable and willing to help you. The teachers/mentors are very experienced in what they do, so you are guaranteed to get superb quality of education and guidance that you can use towards whatever future you desire in film.
Trent Schick – Atlanta, GA
Honestly, best decision I've ever made! Film Connection is affordable and hands-on training. The assignments are very clear and easy to follow. I enjoyed my experience with my mentor and my academic facilitator. My mentor is very professional and made sure I get the best learning experience that I need. He is the best! If you ever want to go to the film school, this is the place for you to go to!
Trentavius Tyree Harper – Southaven, MO
I took the film production and editing program. Your experience may vary depending on the mentors in your area you are assigned. Luckily I had a good film mentor and a great writing mentor. They do a great job and giving you hands-on experience as soon as possible. You will get from the school whatever you put in, so if you are motivated and can bring plenty of ideas, you’re going to be kept busy at all times.
Trevor Shoemaker – New Smyrna Beach, FL
First of all let me start by saying Awesome! Awesome…and did I say Awesome. Being in this program has literally changed my life and level of knowledge, relationships, and access in the industry. I cant not thank my mentors enough, as each and every one of them have been instrumental in my education, hands-on learning, and the future planning for the next phase in the film industry. I am already in talks to partner with all of my mentors on projects, and production works. The Film Connection is a priceless resource that i wished i had discovered 20-30 years ago. Since being in the program, i have worked on 3 feature film projects and have film credits as a result. Can you say “mind-blowing” . I have experienced so much being on different sets and spending time one-on-one with mentor Xander Tennent (Producer); Elliot Campos(Academic mentor); and Richard Lasser (Hollywood Screenwriter). These mentors are all priceless in teaching, and the process while my time has been spent in the Film Connection. I have written several short films and a feature film since being in the program, and it helps to mention that I am currently casting for my first short film. The depth of knowledge learned while in the program has been spot on, and i recommend for others to become and sponge as well and engage the material with relentless pursuit. The ebook and hands on learning will be enhanced when you own the education and be very curious about all aspects. The hands-on process beats any classroom lectures by actually doing. In the hierarchy of learning many students might be better suited by audible. or seeing visual elements, but when you add kinesthetic (hands-on) learning as well, students retain 90% of the content. I have made several referrals to other potential students and hope to offer myself as a mentor in the future. While i could go on and on about the Film Connection, I will tell anyone. You have arrived! Own your education and future! Stay tuned for Future Media Films. We are on the way! Last but not least. Thank you RRFC for a priceless experience!
Troy Looney – Akron, OH
Film Connection has left me with very valuable skills and connections within the industry. Getting to work as a PA on real shoots gave me vital knowledge on how film actually works. The curriculum goes in-depth about the ins and outs of film and my mentor is there to teach everything else. It’s a great experience and one I hope to share with others that wish to pursue film. I was given a screenwriting mentor who has been helping me every step of the way with my very own feature film script. FC Is hard to beat in terms of cost, and what you get out of the program.
Tye Valdez – Tyler, TX
My experience with film connection has been filled with life changing lessons within every chapter you can feel yourself closer to something greater! This feeling doesn?t come without hard days and long nights but you realize in that moment that this is what the industry and your DREAM requires, the program is simply the reflection of the underlying question that not only Hollywood wants to know but what you need ask yourself constantly throughout, will you sink? Or will you swim?
Tyrese Love – New Britain, CT
The experience that I had with RRFC was wonderful I genuinely do feel like I have learned and will be able to find a career because of this program. The communication while in this program was great too I felt like if I had any problems they could quickly get sorted out.
Tyrese Walker – Sierra Vista, AZ
My advisor Elliot Campos has been an excellent resource and has been very easy to correspond with via email and telephone. Niko at Sound Vision Studios is an inspiring and exciting mentor for the hands on aspects of cinematography and films in general. Ron Peterson has been crucial in helping me shape the foundations for a lifelong career in screenwriting as well. Film Connection has been the best decision in my life so far! 8 weeks in and I already feel confident about my future with the opportunities provided by my mentors.
Vanessa Pazmino – Virginia Beach, VA
On having his screenplay options: “We signed the option agreement about two or three weeks ago to finalize the deal.”
Victor Cobb – Atlanta, GA

You’ve got to live the life. You’ve got to do this every day. You’ve got to do it like your life depends on it.
Wes Cobb – Charlotte, NC
By week six, I was allowing her to edit some of my biggest clients’ videos that involved 11 to 14 camera shoots
Wes Cobb about Jaclyn Bueker – Charlotte, NC
I like how everything was done and provided, very well communicated and straight forward to the point. Every lesson was effective and tests were easy to understand and get a grasp of. I also liked how everything was organized and planned around my scheduling.
William Lavoie – Waxhaw, NC
The film connection for me is raw, un-cut, and to-the-point. In a minimalistic way, it can be easy to take for granted, all that this program offers. What I got from this program is that open door of opportunity. Film connection takes you right up to that door without pushing you through it, letting you take your own steps, in whatever direction you want. Working with my mentor was also a pleasure not only for the great advice but for de-mystifying the 'film industry professional' caricature us small town folks have.
William Christopher Dorn – Felton, CA
Film connection delivered on its promise – offers a real connection and relationship with a seasoned mentor and helps you get your feet into the industry and supports you on the journey. The material is a combination of an e-learning course and supplemental material you should also be reading (e.g. a book on screenwriting). You should expected to be a self starter – while there is a schedule that you follow in completing quizzes based on the reading material, there are a variety of assignments along the way that you should complete yourself (e.g. filming some scenes, getting familiar with the camera etc.) that won't explicitly be checked. Overall great value if you want to get into the industry and are passionate about making films.
Yad Jayanth – Houston, TX
I enjoyed the process of learning about the film industry and business, film connections made it really easy to follow the course instructions. I enjoyed doing the quizzes and course reviews.
Yannick Morgan – San Diego, CA
The RRFC program has been very helpful to me as far as understanding all the functional areas of production. I specialized in Cinematography, so my mentor did a great job of helping me understand the proper lighting techniques, and what it takes to effectively tell a story with all the different camera and lighting techniques. I feel more confident today with my understanding of all the various processes and stages of production, thanks to the RFC program.
Yaw Acheampong – Houston, TX
If you want to be a filmmaker, be a filmmaker. Simple as that: make movies. There’s nothing stopping you. There’s no excuses nowadays.
Zac Adams – Nashville, TN
The times I went on the field with my mentor were great and I learned a lot. The only problem is that I felt myself having to constantly reach out to my mentor to get any communication or to set a date to go to a studio or shoot. Everything else was great.
Zach Vaughn – Noblesville, IN
I really enjoyed this experience and I learned so much along the way. My mentor has helped me by explaining his own experience and giving me a lot of input on it as well. I learned how to create a movie script and show my imagination on paper. I really loved this program and would recommend to anyone wanting to become a director.
Zavion Cowell – Des Moines, IA
This program was great! It was a lot of fun for me because film has been a passion of mine since I was a little kid. My mentor was a lot of fun to talk to, him and I got along really well. My facilitator was helpful over the course of the program as well, especially towards the end of the program when I needed it most. I'm hoping that as time goes on, Covid becomes less of a problem, and I can start making movies in the very near future.
Zennon Schmitz – DeForest, WI
My experience at RRFC film connection was very enjoyable. It was lots of fun and I got more insight into the creative process. I also made some new friends that share my interests and passion for movies. It was thanks to them that I was able to come up with cool new ideas.
Alex Holmes -Florissant, MO
My experience at film connection was amazing! I got to work on set on a movie production, meet different actors and actresses, and work a variety of different areas in the industry. Having master classes with Kevin Sharply was the best and helped me learn so much more about editing as well as the film industry as a whole. My experience has been great and I have learned so much and plan to keep on learning more.
Zoe Elise Freedman – Delray Beach, FL
I truly enjoyed learning and speaking with my mentors. Covid really hindered the fullness of my experience due to several inconvenient factors(not school related) whoever, if you plan on taking the steps in being a filmmaker, you should definitely enroll.
Bobby Wilson – Galveston, TX
Film Connection has truly been a remarkable experience! I never thought I’d get the chance to learn how to make films and TV shows from such great people working in the film industries. Aimee Schoof as my film producing mentor has been great because of how encouraging and creative she is when it comes to building a project from the ground up. Philip Halprin as my screenwriting mentor has been a blast with all the amazing techniques he’s taught me to improve my storytelling, world building, and character development. Elliot Campos as my Film Connection Student Services Advisor has been great with all the support and help he’s provided through all the curriculums. I highly recommend Film Connection for anyone that want’s to work in the film or television industries because of all the experience and connections you can gain from this program.
Brady Goudy – Los Angeles, CA
A big thing that I enjoyed about this program was the length of the program. It was too short and it wasn't too long. It worked well with my work schedule and I never felt overwhelmed while being in the program. Another thing that I really liked was being able to work with a professional and get the hands on training because that is what I was looking for out of a film program. Lastly, working with both my mentors and my academic advisor was awesome because they helped make the process easy and smooth, which in turn allowed me to learn so much more. I am so thankful I was a part of the Filmm Connection Program.
Brandon Deutsch -Lino Lakes, MN
My experience with Film Connection was enriching. I was able "to learn" how to learn camera and editing from my mentor. I was also able to gain keen insight into what is to be expected of me as a professional filmmaker who desires to make a living at this profession.
Brandon Little -Winston-Salem, NC
The film connection institute has opened a door for my own curiosity and learning experience. I have been able to work at my own pace and on my own time frame which is important to me. I went in with very little information of the film industry and I am walking out with ten times more in experience and information. Working hands on and up personal is the best way to learn anything.
Brendan Kelly -Olivette, MI
Film Connection helped connect me with a screenwriter and taught me everything I needed to know about the filmmaking process. I would highly recommend it to others!
Brett Western – Forest Park, IL
Everything with the lesson and times it took the lesson were easy to work with. All quiz times were manageable and easy to follow through and coordinated well with the online textbook. Working with Keanu in the studio was fun and though i could not make it in a lot during covid the time i had was exciting and i learned a lot in the short time frame i had there.
Brianna Moran – Pearland, TX

Being from an area that has very little opportunities to get into features, the Film Connection mentor program allowed me to get my foot in the door while learning hands on preparing me to enter the field of production my self

My experience with the RRFC has been overall very helpful in getting me familiarized roles on a film production as well as helping me develop my interest in my film career. Grateful I took the course.
Carlos Hernandez – Orlando, FL
My experience with RRFC. I got started with a commercial director, working around my local area, and RRFC gave me the opportunity to learn hands-on with high tech cameras and editing software, allowing me to not only gain the experience of being on a set, but also the connection to my mentor and his circle of associates. I was given an opportunity to make my own short film with his help and I can’t wait to go to Los Angeles to become an editor. I was surprised to see that I didn’t need to shovel out a ton of money just take the program as well.
Carson Roberson – Foley, AL
I really enjoyed my time in Film Connection. I had already spent a few years on my own immersing myself in classic cinema and trying out filmmaking techniques for myself, but it wasn't until I started this program that I learned the important stuff. I learned about the business side of filmmaking, I learned about how to schedule and manage large projects and most importantly I met lots of professional filmmakers that I will hopefully be working with in the future on many more projects like the ones I got to be a part of while in this program.
Carter Rutledge – Murfreesboro, TN

Christian Dago – San Antonio, TX
I loved working with Ironclad…Their wrap-around orbiting and slow motion effects are the dreamer’s dreams, I’m so clamoring for more and more. They keep giving me work to do…I love their stuff so much I just want to watch it and not do the cropping and editing they need from me.
Christian Kenney – Virginia Beach, VA
I am nearing graduation and I am super excited about working full time in the industry. So far the school has met every expectation I have had thus far so I am looking forward to the near future and help with job placement thanks to Elliot, Zef and the entire staff at Film Connection!
Christopher Messer – Matawan, NJ
[On interviewing with her mentor] He asked what I wanted to do, who I wanted to be, what my plan was. I didn’t know where I was going but I knew that in his hands I would learn just what I was looking for. I would be taught everything I need to be taken care of. He asked me to be his student, which felt uplifting and electric. I left that day with a little bit of knowledge, a lot of hope, and a feeling that I never got when I made an A+ on a test.
Claire Dooley – Baton Rouge, LA
It was awesome going in depth into an enormous industry, the staff and learning tools were incredibly helpful.

From the screenwriting level to the production level, to studying the curriculum… there’s a lot of belief structures that have been broken down for me: that a good idea is not so great if all it is is an idea
Clinton Mann – Hartford, CT
Entering this school and working with my mentor has been an interesting and great experience. I will admit there were times that I had difficulty in learning or understanding certain things due to the way my brains wired. I have a solid knowledge of film, but I'd be lying if I didn't learn everything. There were a lot of things that I didn't know. Especially behind the scenes. I loved working with my mentor. Every time we chatted, I learned and gained something. He knew, he saw something in me we had our first meeting before school, Richard and my family motivate me every day to write and complete my goal.
My clear vision is to Write and Direct my own films and/or television shows. I have an idea of how many I want to do. I'm doing this for myself and my family. To inspire and show the world my creative imagination. No matter how different your brain is wired, you can be anything you want. I accomplished goals in school: I completed my first script, completed more than one, and best of all. I went to school and now I'm graduating from college.
There were some ups and downs from the beginning, middle, and end. Through support and guidance from My family, friends. and my mentor. My mentor opened up my eyes and truly made me believe in myself and my talent. Richard will forever be in good gracious. More than just a mentor, he's a friend. Someday I'll meet him and will get to thank him in person. Also, thank you to Elliot and the school .or accepting me into Film Connection. Despite personal feelings and struggles, I don't regret applying, even when I was at my most frustrating point and wanted to quit, I didn't give up.
I learned to trust myself and my gut. That's what I'm going to do. Thank you Film Connection and Richard Brandes for helping e beginning the prelude to my journey.
Thank you,
Corjai Taylor
Corjai Taylor – Pierre, SD
I loved the time I spent here!. I have learned so much and been given so many opportunities like working on an actual movie set! The hands on experience is what really makes this school incredible. Your mentor would be an actual worker from a movie studio and teach you the things you need. Seriously, this school has pushed my career into new heights!
Corvell R. Newman – Shreveport, LA
Film Radio Film Connection, Inc. is the best option to learn everything about the Film Industry. I learn so much from being here and I can't wait to use the skills they shared with me for my future career.
Dae’Sean Lockwood – New Haven, CT
This is more hands-on with everything and you’re actually out there.
Dakota Martin – Las Vegas, NV
CASA allows for hands on learning from your mentors. The program helped me learn a lot about my craft. The mentors I had put me in pressure situations that allowed me to learn in the heat of the moment. In my opinion that’s the best situation you could be in.
Dale Matthews, Jr. – Clinton, MD

Training with an actual pro helped advance my skills beyond what I could have going through a textbook. Being hands on helped feel like I gaining real experience. Real engagement is what will help in the long term.
Darius Neyland – Colorado Springs, CO
I learn hands-on. I have to actually see and touch and feel, but also kind of have that direction with someone who’s in the know rather than someone reading from a book or watching something online
David Nance – Seattle, WA
I thought training with some actual movie professionals gave me some hands on movie experience. I learned editing from Peter John Ross, who has many years of movie making and editing experience. I also got some hands on experience with shooting some video with green screen backgrounds, lighting, and recording the film. I also got some experience operating a teleprompter on a computer.
David Wayne Ashba – Dublin, OH
Give me your goal, what you want to be, so I can help you get there… we are going to work with that goal. We are going to create milestones to make sure you are on the track to get there.
Deen Olantuji – Dallas, TX
Whenever we do anything, Film Connection students are always involved. Either they’re involved directly, being part of the client’s work, or it’s actually their own project. So right now, out of the 10 films we’re going to show, seven of them are originals from Film Connection students themselves, written and directed by Film Connection students… I feel it’s a great opportunity.
Deen Olatunji – Dallas, TX
RRFC was a great experience for me. Being able to work with active professionals and be on set allowed me to learn hands-on. The RRFC staff is always helpful and kind. The learning environment allowed me to expand my knowledge in the best way!

I really enjoyed my experience as a student at Film Connection. I've learned so much from my mentor Richard Brandes, he's giving me all the tools and lessons I need to become a grey filmmaker. Richard always made time for and her always made sure to review every lesson in the program to make sure I understood the lesson. He's a great teacher and he's a joy to work with. I really enjoy everything about Film connection.
Derielle Cook – St. Petersburg, FL

My time here we good. Good film mentor. Lots of hands on experience.
Dominique Lewis – Charlotte, NC
My experience with my mentor was great. I learned a lot of new things and new techniques that I can use in the field. It was great going to real film sets to really see how they work and flow. The online courses were short and easy (for me, at least).
Drake Meddaugh – Nederland, CO
Once I joined the RRFC program, my mentor seemed very intimidating at first. To be honest I wasn?t sure If I made the right decision. However, I wanted this experience to work more than anything. Nothing great comes easy. I quit my job, among other sacrifices, and started going to the studio full time. Though it took some getting used to, I can now say that I am confident in my skills as an Editor, i have a great relationship with my mentor, and the program absolutely helped me make that leap of faith and figure that out.
Dylan McEwan – Houston, TX
I looked for a program that would allow me to learn about film making and its processes and Film Connect was able to do so while being very flexible with my job schedule. I'm the type of person who doesn't do well learning in normal class setting and the one on one mentoring was much more appealing to me.
Elisha Chavez Gaitan – Penngrove, CA
My mentors have been nothing but helpful showing me the ins and outs of creating content. I learned how to deal with clients and all of the steps it takes. I was able to experience pre production, production, and post production first hand and it was a very exciting experience to see how different each stage is. It was a learning experience for sure! They are awesome guys who are always there to answer questions in full detail and will always make sure to make things easily learnable.
Elizabeth Barattini – Boston, MA
All the way from Arkansas I was able to work with a Hollywood Director and write a screenplay. I formed a great relationship with my mentor all while learning how to properly write and pitch a movie script. I was able to do this all while working a full time job as a News Producer. If you want to become a qualified film professional quickly, all while managing every day life, I highly recommend this program. It?s great for networking. The professionals you work alongside show they care and are very helpful.
Elizabeth Lau – Conway, AR
Amazing experience, incredible people. Highly recommended for any future film makers.

Being a student at RRFC was an incredible experience. Instead of sitting in a classroom, I was actually able to get a feel for what it is to work on productions and talk to professionals. Being able to get details that I wouldn't have normally was incredibly helpful and really opened my eyes and brought awareness to working on film and I am very glad I chose this path.
Ethan McLain – Riverton, UT
Getting into the atmosphere and connecting with professionals is priceless. I learned quite a lot from the lessons that were assigned to me weekly but nothing beats having a mentor that not only gets your foot into the door giving you the opportunity to connect with real professionals in the field. My mentor was always there for me if I had any questions and went above and beyond anything I expected. My academic facilitator called weekly and answered any questions I had and offered advice on projects I was working on. They provides you with all the tolls to be successful and as they say, it is up to you to make the program all that it can be.

Filmmaking is the only job I’ve ever seriously considered, but in all my years of research, there has never been a way to break into the industry that doesn’t involve a high asking price or simple luck. The Film Connection Program has changed all that. By pairing you with a mentor who works in the industry and letting you work hands-on with equipment and software, all at a low cost and without the two years of weed out classes that come with a traditional college, I’ve learned more in 6 months than I ever could traditionally. It’s given me the skills and experience necessary to work in the industry and to make my way up in the film world.
Fernando Farias – San Antonio, TX

Although it wasn’t the perfect time to do this program seeing as there wasn’t a lot of business at the production studio because of Covid. I am happy that I did it and learned what I could. I met great people, learned from there experiences, and gained some experience of my own. My time here at RRFC has been really great and overall an amazing experience. I had one thing on my mind and that was to become a cinematographer and get into this business, but when my plans quickly changed about which university I would be transferring to, it made me realize that perhaps in-school classrooms weren’t for me. I found Film Connection online and loved the idea of being able to get hands-on work and training. My two mentors and my academic adviser have been nothing but wonderful to me. I feel like my knowledge has grown a ton during the six months of this program. With my in-person mentor I have learned so much when it comes to the camera and the whole process with shooting format. I have also learned so much when it comes to lighting and enquitment. I am currently finishing up my first feature screenplay and I could not have done it without my screenwriting mentor. He has helped me with the correct structure for my story and from the start it has been so easy sharing my ideas with him. The feeling of being on set and helping around on set truly makes me feel like a part of the team. It makes me feel like this is where I belong.

I am very happy with the program as a whole.

It’s impossible to put into words just how much I have learned and experienced through this program and with Wrigley Media Group. This was a great program. The hands on aspect of it is really the best part about it. I learned more doing actual shoots with people than I did in my four years at college. I met a lot of interesting and helpful people along the way and enjoyed my experience with my mentor, who grew to be a very good friend in the process. Thanks to this program, I was able to write a short film and am now currently deep in the pre production process of getting it made.
Jonathan DiFilippo – Staten Island, NY
I'm Jonathan Getachew, and this is my review on Film Connection.
I found the program to be very informational and helpful for my needs. I want to make my own cartoon, but I needed to get better at writing. I was very fortunate to find this class thanks to my family.
During my writing sessions with my screenwriting mentor, Eric, I've learned things about my pilot I didn't know before like how it could be better, and the process of making a draft. As I was writing my pilot, I had ideas that were so good I didn't want to cut them, and my series as a concept evolved as I went along from being a cable series to a streaming series.
During my classes at DC, which I am currently taking, I got to know every one of my mentors, including Ricardo, and my classmates, and I found them to be very supportive. In a way where it's somewhat like family. Especially when I was stuck on my pilot, mainly trying to find an ending that doesn't make the script go past 30 minutes, which was the limit I wanted it to be, and I desperately needed ideas.
In conclusion, I think this program was a step closer towards my dream career. Everyone was supportive so far, and I can safely say I am really proud of how my pilot turned out.

The area of the program that I have enjoyed most is the do-it-yourself aspect. At the beginning of the program, I had thought someone would be teaching me what to do and how to do it. I later realized the program gives you tasks and forces you to figure out how to accomplish these tasks on your own, which I have found quite educational.
