Programs

In the Film Connection for Film Production & Editing program, you will study directing, producing and screenwriting as you develop your movie idea with a professional filmmaker. Then, upon meeting the necessary requirements, you will be given the opportunity to fly to Los Angeles or New York and pitch your film idea to an executive who could buy or get your movie made.

Film Production & Editing Details

In the Film Connection for Cinematography program, you will learn the techniques involved in capturing a moving image and will start to develop “the eye of the DP.” The cinematographer is literally the set ‘magician.’ DPs are responsible for the technological wizardry required to get the needed shots and to shape light to achieve the director’s desired artistic effect.

Film Connection grad Mark Doster wins an Accolade Award, pursues feature film!

Mark Doster, Denver, CO
When Mark came across the Film Connection, he was already studying film in a film school in Denver, Colorado, but he felt he was missing something. “I don’t really do well in a giant class setting,” he told us. By contrast, the one-on-one training and practical instruction he received with his mentors, Johnny Fisher in Denver and Richard Brandes in Los Angeles, really helped give him perspective on the business of film.

Given the varied and spectacular scenery in and around Denver, and an enthusiastic state film commission, the Mile High City has been home to hundreds of movies, TV shows and specials, and other video productions. It may not have the cache of L.A. or New York, but Denver has a lot to offer the filmmaking industry.

So it should be no surprise there are many Denver film schools to choose from. However, there’s only one that gets you inside an actual Denver film production company to work as a film student extern. We feel it’s the best way to learn directing, producing, editing, camera, screenwriting or general production is to start inside a Denver film production company as a film extern.

We understand many industries require a certain amount of time in the classroom. We just don’t feel the film industry is one of them. Why read about a camera when you can gain real experience operating one? You can’t ask YouTube video questions if you’re getting hung up on something. And online tutorials, they just can’t offer feedback on your suggestions.

With The Denver Film Connection, you’ll be working one-on-one with an industry insider, seeing how movies, TV, and videos are made firsthand. Yes, there are still required readings, tests, and homework – we are an educational institution after all. But learning and lending a hand to your mentor and gaining practical experience by being in the middle of the action just isn’t something you can find in most classrooms. If you don’t want to spend two years going through general education to even crack open that first film theory textbook, with us you can start now and graduate in six to nine months. Our Directing, Film Production and Editing, and Cinematography program cost just a fraction of those private colleges, film schools, and universities.

In four years at a university, you’ll end up with a degree and maybe a few student projects. In that same amount of time, your name could be in the credits of real films, real projects when you enroll in Film Connection. The choice is yours, but what makes the most sense for your future?

In the Studio or from Your Home

We feel the best way to learn is to do – that’s why we do film education the way it’s meant to be done: hands-on! The sights (and sites), sounds, and even the smells of being on set or on location can’t be beat. This also gives you the opportunity to learn several different things at once, either through direction or observation.

However, these situations aren’t always available. We offer the year 2020 as proof. Production companies, locations, and sets were closed due to Covid-19. However, those in Film Connection programs still had access to their mentors and were able to keep learning and working towards their future.

For nearly three decades, we’ve been offering externs the chance to learn remotely. While the pandemic shook up everything for everyone, life, in general, has a way of throwing individual curveballs to each one of us. Whether it’s a job, family needs, or whatever else, we wanted to make sure externs still had access to industry professionals.

This also gives you the option to look outside the Denver city limits for mentoring. Through remote learning, you can meet with a Film Connection screenwriter no matter where they’re located. Have an interest in working with a specific Film Connection mentor even though they live several states away? If you have reliable internet and a strong enough computer, we can make it happen.

When Opportunity Knocks, Will You Answer?

That kind of access leads us to one of the most important aspects of what the Denver Film Connection can offer. Not only are you learning a great deal about the industry, but you’re also making connections that can help get you your “big break.” These are professional film producers working in the real world.

The paying world. And while you may be taking our programs to give you the insight you need to make your movie, these day-to-day interactions may lead to paychecks that help pay for your movie. They may lead to relationships with crew members that can help you with light, sound, editing, finding actors, finding funding, and more.

These are much more than “contacts” or names given to you secondhand from a friend. These are people that you’ve been working with for months. They’ve seen you in action, they know what you can do. These are opportunities for you to prove your worth, to show that you have what it takes to make a career in the industry.

Every day, every project has the potential to connect you to someone new, someone who can help you down the line. We’ll give you the opportunities – but it’s up to you to show them what you have.

Denver Film Connection Mentors

The only way we’re able to offer such a unique learning opportunity is by getting great professionals who love to mentor tomorrow’s pros. Not only do they need to be experienced, knowledgeable, and accessible, but they have to take a vested interest in seeing the next generation of filmmakers succeed. We feel the Denver Film Connection mentors fit the bill.

They’ve filmed it all: Short films, commercials, music videos to full-length films. Our mentors have proven time and again they’re able to move between mediums, effortlessly moving between film and digital, big screen to small. This is how a real-world production company must operate, having the agility to move from one project to the next, fully equipped to meet the needs of their next client.

They’re able to do so because of their experience – and an extensive amount of gear. You’ll learn how to set the lighting, how to operate the variety of cameras and lenses, and how to edit what you’ve shot. With us, you could be training inside of the production company, on the set, or on-location, working one-on-one with an industry pro: a Film Connection mentor.
