The scenic coastal town of Monterey, California, and the nearby city of Salinas, comprise the two most significant cities of Monterey County on California’s central coast. The breathtaking beauty of the area was the muse for several of the novels of legendary author John Steinbeck, who hailed from Salinas; the same beauty today continues to attract filmmakers. Close to breathtaking coastal cliffs, mountains, and rolling hills, this area is ideal for diverse locations for filming. Several film and TV production companies make their home in Monterey or Salinas, and the county has its own film commission office.
If you are considering a career in filmmaking as a film director, film producer, film editor, or cameraman, the Monterey-Salinas area can be an excellent choice for you, especially if you desire a scenic alternative to the busy, crazy land of Los Angeles. Numerous well-known movies have been filmed in the Monterey-Salinas area, including Star Trek VI: The Voyage Home, Sudden Impact, and Invincible, as well as several famous classics such as National Velvet, The Parent Trap, and East of Eden. This area is no stranger to television production, either; Falcon Crest was filmed in this area, as well as episodes of WWF Raw and Rescue 911.
FILM CONNECTION Film School of Monterey-Salinas offers an inexpensive, six-month course that will hook you up with a working film or television professional who will serve as your personal instructor and mentor. You will gain hands-on experience on real film or video shoots, and upon graduation, you will have the experience and the connections to get a job in film or video in Monterey, Salinas or anywhere else you choose to go.
